Upravo smo na kraju najtoplije godine u posljednjih 174 godine na ovoj planeti - a vjerojatno je bila i najtoplija od proteklih 125.000 godina, piše The New York Times. Očekivala se još jedna godina s rekordnim temperaturama, ali ne i ono što se dogodilo: beskrajni toplinski valovi u Argentini i na jugu SAD, katastrofalni šumski požari diljem Kanade, poplave u Libiji s tisućama mrtvih, rekordno tanki ledeni pokrivač u morima oko Antarktike usred zime. Znanstvenici pokušavaju utvrditi jesu li tako iznimno visoke temperature znak da se globalno zagrijavanje ubrzava. Od lipnja do studenog, svakog mjeseca bilježeni su rekordi, a nastavilo se tako većinom i u prosincu.

Najmračnija hipoteza jest da se zagrijavanje planeta ubrzava, da efekti klimatskih promjena stižu brže nego što se očekivalo. No to je još nepotvrđena hipoteza. Sama po sebi, jedna iznimna godina nije dovoljna za zaključak da je nešto pogrešno u računalnim modelima znanstvenika, kaže Andrew Dessler sa američkog sveučilišta A&M. Ne možemo zaključiti da su predviđanja pogrešna ili da se nešto čudno događa dok ne stigne više dokaza, ističe Dessler.

Oceani su bili najtopliji ikad, ali opet su njihove temperature u 2023. ostale u granicama očekivanja znanstvenika. Američka Nacionalna uprava za oceane i atmosferu objavila je da je 2023. bila šesta najtoplija godina na Arktiku od početka mjerenja 1900. godine, a ako se gleda samo ljeto, ono je bilo najtoplije. Emisije stakleničkih plinova koje zagrijavaju planet su u porastu, unatoč tome što već godinama zemlje obećavaju da će ih smanjiti. Istraživači iz Global Carbon Projecta procjenjuju da će otpuštanje ugljičnog dioksida izgaranjem fosilnih goriva u ovoj godini porasti za 1,1 posto u usporedbi s 2022. U nizu ostalih obećanja, šezdeset država se na klimatskom summitu UN-a u Dubaiju obavezalo povećati učinkovitost novih klima-uređaja za 50 posto i smanjiti njihovu emisiju stakleničkih plinova za gotovo 70 posto.

Klimatske promjene već dugo nisu apstrakcija: Svjetska zdravstvena organizacija (WHO) objavila je da se procjenjuje da je 2022. bilo 249 milijuna slučajeva malarije diljem svijeta, što je za pet milijuna više u odnosu na 2021. Povećan je broj bolesnih u pet zemalja, a tome su u tri zemlje izravno doprinijele klimatske promjene.

Veći dio protekle 174 godine ljudi su punili zrak stakleničkim plinovima i aerosolima ili sitnim česticama iz dimnjaka i ispušnih cijevi. Ove čestice su štetne za pluća, a u atmosferi reflektiraju sunčevo zračenje. Zbog javnog zdravlja, posljednjih desetljeća države su počele smanjivati onečišćenje aerosolom. Prošlog mjeseca je istraživač klime James E. Hansen ustvrdio da su znanstvenici uvelike podcijenili razinu do koje će se planet zagrijavati ukoliko države smanje ispuštanje aerosola bez smanjenja emisije ugljika. Od 2000. godine ubrzava se porast temperature zbog ograničavanja aerosola, tvrdi Hansen i njegovi istomišljenici, no ne slažu se svi znanstvenici s time, navodi NYT.

Zemlja je već jednom preživjela veliki skok stakleničkih plinova. Prije 56 milijuna godina uslijed geoloških previranja u atmosferu je ispušten ugljični dioksid u količinama usporedivim s današnjim. Temperature su skočile, oceani su postali kiseli, došlo je do masovnog izumiranja vrsta. No razlika je u tome što je tada trebalo oko 3000 do 5000 godina da se stigne do te točke, kaže dr. Bärbel Hönisch, znanstvenica na Lamont-Doherty Earth Observatory Sveučilišta Columbia. Da bi neutralizirala taj višak ugljičnog dioksida, Zemlji je tada trebalo oko 150.000 godina.

Upravo smo na kraju najtoplije godine u posljednjih 174 godine na ovoj planeti - a vjerojatno je bila i najtoplija od proteklih 125.000 godina, piše The New York Times. Očekivala se još jedna godina s rekordnim temperaturama, ali ne i ono što se dogodilo: beskrajni toplinski valovi u Argentini i na jugu SAD, katastrofalni šumski požari diljem Kanade, poplave u Libiji s tisućama mrtvih, rekordno tanki ledeni pokrivač u morima oko Antarktike usred zime. Znanstvenici pokušavaju utvrditi jesu li tako iznimno visoke temperature znak da se globalno zagrijavanje ubrzava. Od lipnja do studenog, svakog mjeseca bilježeni su rekordi, a nastavilo se tako većinom i u prosincu.

Najmračnija hipoteza jest da se zagrijavanje planeta ubrzava, da efekti klimatskih promjena stižu brže nego što se očekivalo. No to je još nepotvrđena hipoteza. Sama po sebi, jedna iznimna godina nije dovoljna za zaključak da je nešto pogrešno u računalnim modelima znanstvenika, kaže Andrew Dessler sa američkog sveučilišta A&M. Ne možemo zaključiti da su predviđanja pogrešna ili da se nešto čudno događa dok ne stigne više dokaza, ističe Dessler.

Oceani su bili najtopliji ikad, ali opet su njihove temperature u 2023. ostale u granicama očekivanja znanstvenika. Američka Nacionalna uprava za oceane i atmosferu objavila je da je 2023. bila šesta najtoplija godina na Arktiku od početka mjerenja 1900. godine, a ako se gleda samo ljeto, ono je bilo najtoplije. Emisije stakleničkih plinova koje zagrijavaju planet su u porastu, unatoč tome što već godinama zemlje obećavaju da će ih smanjiti. Istraživači iz Global Carbon Projecta procjenjuju da će otpuštanje ugljičnog dioksida izgaranjem fosilnih goriva u ovoj godini porasti za 1,1 posto u usporedbi s 2022. U nizu ostalih obećanja, šezdeset država se na klimatskom summitu UN-a u Dubaiju obavezalo povećati učinkovitost novih klima-uređaja za 50 posto i smanjiti njihovu emisiju stakleničkih plinova za gotovo 70 posto.

Klimatske promjene već dugo nisu apstrakcija: Svjetska zdravstvena organizacija (WHO) objavila je da se procjenjuje da je 2022. bilo 249 milijuna slučajeva malarije diljem svijeta, što je za pet milijuna više u odnosu na 2021. Povećan je broj bolesnih u pet zemalja, a tome su u tri zemlje izravno doprinijele klimatske promjene.

Veći dio protekle 174 godine ljudi su punili zrak stakleničkim plinovima i aerosolima ili sitnim česticama iz dimnjaka i ispušnih cijevi. Ove čestice su štetne za pluća, a u atmosferi reflektiraju sunčevo zračenje. Zbog javnog zdravlja, posljednjih desetljeća države su počele smanjivati onečišćenje aerosolom. Prošlog mjeseca je istraživač klime James E. Hansen ustvrdio da su znanstvenici uvelike podcijenili razinu do koje će se planet zagrijavati ukoliko države smanje ispuštanje aerosola bez smanjenja emisije ugljika. Od 2000. godine ubrzava se porast temperature zbog ograničavanja aerosola, tvrdi Hansen i njegovi istomišljenici, no ne slažu se svi znanstvenici s time, navodi NYT.

Zemlja je već jednom preživjela veliki skok stakleničkih plinova. Prije 56 milijuna godina uslijed geoloških previranja u atmosferu je ispušten ugljični dioksid u količinama usporedivim s današnjim. Temperature su skočile, oceani su postali kiseli, došlo je do masovnog izumiranja vrsta. No razlika je u tome što je tada trebalo oko 3000 do 5000 godina da se stigne do te točke, kaže dr. Bärbel Hönisch, znanstvenica na Lamont-Doherty Earth Observatory Sveučilišta Columbia. Da bi neutralizirala taj višak ugljičnog dioksida, Zemlji je tada trebalo oko 150.000 godina.
