Bračni par Ozlem Tureci i Uğur Şahin osnivači su njemačke kompanije BioNTech, koja je s američkim Pfizerom razvila cjepivo protiv koronavirusa. Postoji dobra vjerojatnost da bi njihov rad i rezultati na tom polju mogli odlučiti ishod borbe protiv trenutačne svjetske pandemije.

Znanstvenik Uğur Şahin u razgovoru za The Guardian izrazio je samouvjerenost da njegov proizvod može uništiti virus i okončati pandemiju koja cijeli svijet drži taocem.

BioNTech i Pfizer objavili su u ponedjeljak da je njihovo potencijalno cjepivo protiv covida 19 pokazalo učinkovitost kod 90 posto ispitanika, prema prvim rezultatima treće faze kliničkog ispitivanja.

Analiza cijepljenih sudionika i onih koji su dobili placebo naznačuje stopu efikasnosti cjepiva veću od 90 posto, sedam dana nakon što su primili drugu dozu. To znači da se zaštita postiže 28 dana nakon cijepljenja, koje se sastoji od dvije doze.

'Dramatičan učinak'

Ipak, bez odgovora ostaje pitanje je li cjepivo učinkovito i za oboljele s asimptomatskim infekcijama.

- Ako se postavlja pitanje možemo li zaustaviti ovu pandemiju cjepivom, moj odgovor je DA, jer vjerujem da će čak i zaštita samo od simptomatskih infekcija imati dramatičan učinak, rekao je izvršni direktor BioNTecha u prvom intervjuu za britanske novine preko Zoom aplikacije iz njegova doma u Mainzu.

Sve dok nisu otkriveni rezultati kliničkog ispitivanja u ponedjeljak nije bio siguran hoće li cjepivo pokrenuti dovoljno snažnu reakciju imunološkog sustava kod ljudi.

- Bilo je moguće da cjepivo neće moći naštetiti virusu, da pronađe svoj put u stanicama i dalje čini ljude bolesnima. Sada znamo da cjepiva mogu pobijediti ovaj virus.

Iako trenutna ispitivanja cjepiva BioNTech/Pfizer formalno ne dokazuju da ono sprečava prijenos virusa, u odnosu na to da može zaustaviti razvijanje bolesti kod zaraženih osoba, 55-godišnji znanstvenik ističe da su ga rezultati visoke učinkovitosti doveli do pretpostavke da može.

BioNTech, tvrtka koju su 2008. godine osnovali njemački znanstvenici i bračni par Şahin i Özlem Türeci, kao i austrijski onkolog Christoph Huber, razvili su svoje cjepivo eksperimentalnom metodom poznatom kao mRNA. Iako konvencionalna cjepiva uzimaju genetske informacije od virusa i kultiviraju ih u ljudskoj stanici, metoda mRNA samo zahtijeva genetski kod virusa, čime se proces proizvodnje skraćuje za gotovo tri mjeseca.

'Nije bilo vremena za čekanje'

Pfizerova stručnost za cjepiva za masovno tržište i brze mjere regulatornih tijela pomogle su ubrzati razvojni proces na deset mjeseci, a ne godina, poručuje Şahin. 

- Nije bilo vremena za čekanje. Zamislite da želite doći s jednog kraja Londona na drugi, a posvuda su gužve u prometu. Trebalo bi vam pola dana. Za naš projekt ulice su bile prazne, rekao je.

- Cjepivo sprečava covidu pristup našim stanicama. Ali čak i ako virus uspije pronaći put, T-stanice ga udaraju po glavi i eliminiraju. Jako smo dobro istrenirali naš imunološki sustav za usavršavanje ova dva obrambena poteza. Sada znamo da se virus ne može obraniti od tih mehanizama, pojasnio je.

- Neka ključna pitanja u vezi s djelotvornošću cjepiva dobit će odgovore tek sljedećih tjedana i mjeseci, rekao je Şahin za The Guardian.

Proces utvrđivanja može li cjepivo i zaustaviti asimptomatske infekcije moglo bi potrajati i do godinu dana.

Daljnji uvid u to nudi li cjepivo različite razine zaštite različitim dobnim skupinama, rekao je, očekuje se za otprilike tri tjedna. Klinička ispitivanja također još nisu u potpunosti utvrdila djeluje li cjepivo različito na ljude iz različitih etničkih skupina.

Bračni par Ozlem Tureci i Uğur Şahin osnivači su njemačke kompanije BioNTech, koja je s američkim Pfizerom razvila cjepivo protiv koronavirusa. Postoji dobra vjerojatnost da bi njihov rad i rezultati na tom polju mogli odlučiti ishod borbe protiv trenutačne svjetske pandemije.

Znanstvenik Uğur Şahin u razgovoru za The Guardian izrazio je samouvjerenost da njegov proizvod može uništiti virus i okončati pandemiju koja cijeli svijet drži taocem.

BioNTech i Pfizer objavili su u ponedjeljak da je njihovo potencijalno cjepivo protiv covida 19 pokazalo učinkovitost kod 90 posto ispitanika, prema prvim rezultatima treće faze kliničkog ispitivanja.

Analiza cijepljenih sudionika i onih koji su dobili placebo naznačuje stopu efikasnosti cjepiva veću od 90 posto, sedam dana nakon što su primili drugu dozu. To znači da se zaštita postiže 28 dana nakon cijepljenja, koje se sastoji od dvije doze.

'Dramatičan učinak'

Ipak, bez odgovora ostaje pitanje je li cjepivo učinkovito i za oboljele s asimptomatskim infekcijama.

- Ako se postavlja pitanje možemo li zaustaviti ovu pandemiju cjepivom, moj odgovor je DA, jer vjerujem da će čak i zaštita samo od simptomatskih infekcija imati dramatičan učinak, rekao je izvršni direktor BioNTecha u prvom intervjuu za britanske novine preko Zoom aplikacije iz njegova doma u Mainzu.

Sve dok nisu otkriveni rezultati kliničkog ispitivanja u ponedjeljak nije bio siguran hoće li cjepivo pokrenuti dovoljno snažnu reakciju imunološkog sustava kod ljudi.

- Bilo je moguće da cjepivo neće moći naštetiti virusu, da pronađe svoj put u stanicama i dalje čini ljude bolesnima. Sada znamo da cjepiva mogu pobijediti ovaj virus.

Iako trenutna ispitivanja cjepiva BioNTech/Pfizer formalno ne dokazuju da ono sprečava prijenos virusa, u odnosu na to da može zaustaviti razvijanje bolesti kod zaraženih osoba, 55-godišnji znanstvenik ističe da su ga rezultati visoke učinkovitosti doveli do pretpostavke da može.

BioNTech, tvrtka koju su 2008. godine osnovali njemački znanstvenici i bračni par Şahin i Özlem Türeci, kao i austrijski onkolog Christoph Huber, razvili su svoje cjepivo eksperimentalnom metodom poznatom kao mRNA. Iako konvencionalna cjepiva uzimaju genetske informacije od virusa i kultiviraju ih u ljudskoj stanici, metoda mRNA samo zahtijeva genetski kod virusa, čime se proces proizvodnje skraćuje za gotovo tri mjeseca.

'Nije bilo vremena za čekanje'

Pfizerova stručnost za cjepiva za masovno tržište i brze mjere regulatornih tijela pomogle su ubrzati razvojni proces na deset mjeseci, a ne godina, poručuje Şahin. 

- Nije bilo vremena za čekanje. Zamislite da želite doći s jednog kraja Londona na drugi, a posvuda su gužve u prometu. Trebalo bi vam pola dana. Za naš projekt ulice su bile prazne, rekao je.

- Cjepivo sprečava covidu pristup našim stanicama. Ali čak i ako virus uspije pronaći put, T-stanice ga udaraju po glavi i eliminiraju. Jako smo dobro istrenirali naš imunološki sustav za usavršavanje ova dva obrambena poteza. Sada znamo da se virus ne može obraniti od tih mehanizama, pojasnio je.

- Neka ključna pitanja u vezi s djelotvornošću cjepiva dobit će odgovore tek sljedećih tjedana i mjeseci, rekao je Şahin za The Guardian.

Proces utvrđivanja može li cjepivo i zaustaviti asimptomatske infekcije moglo bi potrajati i do godinu dana.

Daljnji uvid u to nudi li cjepivo različite razine zaštite različitim dobnim skupinama, rekao je, očekuje se za otprilike tri tjedna. Klinička ispitivanja također još nisu u potpunosti utvrdila djeluje li cjepivo različito na ljude iz različitih etničkih skupina.

Bračni par Ozlem Tureci i Uğur Şahin osnivači su njemačke kompanije BioNTech, koja je s američkim Pfizerom razvila cjepivo protiv koronavirusa. Postoji dobra vjerojatnost da bi njihov rad i rezultati na tom polju mogli odlučiti ishod borbe protiv trenutačne svjetske pandemije.

Znanstvenik Uğur Şahin u razgovoru za The Guardian izrazio je samouvjerenost da njegov proizvod može uništiti virus i okončati pandemiju koja cijeli svijet drži taocem.

BioNTech i Pfizer objavili su u ponedjeljak da je njihovo potencijalno cjepivo protiv covida 19 pokazalo učinkovitost kod 90 posto ispitanika, prema prvim rezultatima treće faze kliničkog ispitivanja.
