UN-ova konferencija, ključna za sprječavanje najpogubnijih učinaka klimatskih promjena počela je u ponedjeljak, a njezin zadatak je obeshrabrujući zbog neuspjeha velikih industrijskih zemalja da se dogovore o ambicioznim novim obvezama.

COP26 u škotskom Glasgowu počeo je dan nakon što se G20 najvećih ekonomija nije uspjelo obvezati na cilj o ugljičnoj neutralnosti do 2050., rok koji je naveden kao nužan za sprječavanje najekstremnijeg globalnog zatopljenja.

Umjesto toga, njihovi razgovori u Rimu tek su prepoznali "ključnu važnost" zaustavljanja neto emisija štetnih plinova "do ili oko sredine stoljeća", ali nisu odredili vremenski okvir za postupno izbacivanje ugljena kod kuće te su razvodnili obećanja o smanjenju emisija metana, stakleničkog plina puno jačeg od ugljikovog dioksida.

Deklarirana predanost postupnom ukidanju subvencija na fosilna goriva "u srednjem roku" formulacija je koju je G20 upotrijebio na samitu u Pittsburghu još 2009. godine.

"Čovječanstvo već dugo kasni po pitanju klimatskih promjena. Minuta je do ponoći na satu sudnjeg dana i trebamo djelovati odmah", rekao je britanski premijer Boris Johnson na otvaranju konferencije.

"Ako danas ne shvatimo ozbiljno klimatske promjene, sutra će biti prekasno za našu djecu."

Dok je Johnson govorio, švedska klimatska aktivistica Greta Thunberg retvitala je poziv milijunima njezinih pristaša da potpišu otvoreno pismo kojim se lidere optužuje za izdaju.

"Ovo nije vježba. Ovo je crvena oznaka za Zemlju", navodi se u pismu. "Milijuni će patiti dok se naš planet bude uništavao - zastrašujuća budućnost koja će se stvoriti, ili izbjeći, odlukama koje vi donesete. Vi imate moć odlučivanja."

Brojni lideri stat će na pozornicu u Glasgowu na početku dvotjednih pregovora odlučujuće klimatske konferencije kako je opisuje domaćin Velika Britanija.

Glavni tajnik UN-a Antonio Guterres rekao je liderima da bi se u slučaju neuspjeha konferencije o globalnom zatopljenju zemlje trebale svake godine vraćati s boljim prijedlozima umjesto svakih pet godina kao dosad.

"Ako obveze ne budu dostatne na kraju ovog COP-a, zemlje moraju preispitati svoje nacionalne klimatske planove i politike - ne svakih pet godina, već svake godine i svakog trenutka", rekao je Gutteres političarima u Glasgowu, uključujući američkog predsjednika Joea Bidena, njemačku kancelarku Angelu Merkel i indijskog premijera Narendru Modija.

Šef UN-a rekao je da često ima "manjka vjerodostojnosti i viška zbunjenosti glede ciljeva smanjenja i nulte stope emisija".

Istaknuo je da se treba držati cilja o ograničenju rasta globalne temperture za 1.5 stupanj i pozvao na solidarnost sa zemljama u razvoju.

"Ovisnost svijeta o fosilnim gorivima dovodi čovječanstvo na rub opstanka. Izbor je jednostavan: ili ćemo to zaustaviti ili će to zaustaviti nas", dodao je.

"Vrijeme je da kažemo 'dosta'. Dosta uništavanju bioraznolikosti. Dosta tomu da se sami ubijamo ugljikom. Da prirodu tretiramo kao zahod. Dosta paljenju šuma, bušenju tla i kopanju. Sami kopamo vlasite grobove", dramatično je upozorio glavni tajnik UN-a.

COP26 u škotskom Glasgowu počeo je dan nakon što se G20 najvećih ekonomija nije uspjelo obvezati na cilj o ugljičnoj neutralnosti do 2050., rok koji je naveden kao nužan za sprječavanje najekstremnijeg globalnog zatopljenja.

Umjesto toga, njihovi razgovori u Rimu tek su prepoznali "ključnu važnost" zaustavljanja neto emisija štetnih plinova "do ili oko sredine stoljeća", ali nisu odredili vremenski okvir za postupno izbacivanje ugljena kod kuće te su razvodnili obećanja o smanjenju emisija metana, stakleničkog plina puno jačeg od ugljikovog dioksida.

Deklarirana predanost postupnom ukidanju subvencija na fosilna goriva "u srednjem roku" formulacija je koju je G20 upotrijebio na samitu u Pittsburghu još 2009. godine.

"Čovječanstvo već dugo kasni po pitanju klimatskih promjena. Minuta je do ponoći na satu sudnjeg dana i trebamo djelovati odmah", rekao je britanski premijer Boris Johnson na otvaranju konferencije.

"Ako danas ne shvatimo ozbiljno klimatske promjene, sutra će biti prekasno za našu djecu."

Dok je Johnson govorio, švedska klimatska aktivistica Greta Thunberg retvitala je poziv milijunima njezinih pristaša da potpišu otvoreno pismo kojim se lidere optužuje za izdaju.

"Ovo nije vježba. Ovo je crvena oznaka za Zemlju", navodi se u pismu. "Milijuni će patiti dok se naš planet bude uništavao - zastrašujuća budućnost koja će se stvoriti, ili izbjeći, odlukama koje vi donesete. Vi imate moć odlučivanja."

Brojni lideri stat će na pozornicu u Glasgowu na početku dvotjednih pregovora odlučujuće klimatske konferencije kako je opisuje domaćin Velika Britanija.

Glavni tajnik UN-a Antonio Guterres rekao je liderima da bi se u slučaju neuspjeha konferencije o globalnom zatopljenju zemlje trebale svake godine vraćati s boljim prijedlozima umjesto svakih pet godina kao dosad.

"Ako obveze ne budu dostatne na kraju ovog COP-a, zemlje moraju preispitati svoje nacionalne klimatske planove i politike - ne svakih pet godina, već svake godine i svakog trenutka", rekao je Gutteres političarima u Glasgowu, uključujući američkog predsjednika Joea Bidena, njemačku kancelarku Angelu Merkel i indijskog premijera Narendru Modija.

Šef UN-a rekao je da često ima "manjka vjerodostojnosti i viška zbunjenosti glede ciljeva smanjenja i nulte stope emisija".

Istaknuo je da se treba držati cilja o ograničenju rasta globalne temperture za 1.5 stupanj i pozvao na solidarnost sa zemljama u razvoju.

"Ovisnost svijeta o fosilnim gorivima dovodi čovječanstvo na rub opstanka. Izbor je jednostavan: ili ćemo to zaustaviti ili će to zaustaviti nas", dodao je.

"Vrijeme je da kažemo 'dosta'. Dosta uništavanju bioraznolikosti. Dosta tomu da se sami ubijamo ugljikom. Da prirodu tretiramo kao zahod. Dosta paljenju šuma, bušenju tla i kopanju. Sami kopamo vlasite grobove", dramatično je upozorio glavni tajnik UN-a.
