Kada je pokret “Black Lives Matter” nakon ubojstva Georgea Floyda 2020. godine postao mainstream između ostalog, klečanja na himnu, uzdignutih ruku, moderno je među NBA košarkašima u završnici sezone bilo i umjesto prezimena na dresu imati poruku.

Pa se tako umjesto prezimena Antetokounmpo, Tatum ili Morant na dresovima moglo vidjeti poruke “Equality” (u prijevodu s engleskog jednakost), “Black Lives Matter” ili “Enough” (dosta). Tada je Enes Kanter iz Bostona Celticsa na dresu nosio poruku “Freedom” (sloboda). Igrom slučaja, godinu i pol kasnije, i dalje turski centar nosi istu riječ na dresu. U međuvremenu je i službeno promijenio svoje ime u Enes Kanter Freedom.

Turski košarkaš i član slavnih Celticsa Kanter, koji je godinama poznat kao trn u oku turskih vlasti koje su mu oduzele putovnicu i učinile ga čovjekom bez domovine, konačno dobivanje američkog državljanstva koncem prošle godine proslavio je promjenom imena, točnije dodatkom. Od tada na njegovom zelenom ili bijelom dresu “Kelta” iznad broja 13 opet piše Freedom (Sloboda). Puno ime iskusnog centra sada je Enes Kanter Freedom.

Kanter je kao veliki protivnik turskog predsjednika Recepa Tayyipa Erdogana došao u nemilost tamošnjih vlasti. Govorio je kako se dugo stoga bojao čak i za vlastiti život. Kao veliki borac za ljudska prava kritizirao je i Kinu zbog situacije u Tibetu. Na utakmicama često nosi političke poruke. Tako je između ostalog imao i poruke “Oslobodite Tibet”, “Oslobodite Hong Kong”, a javno je tražio i bojkot skorašnjih Zimskih olimpijskih igara u Pekingu.

No, nije Kanter pardon Freedom jedini slučaj promjene imena među košarkašima kojom se željelo poslati poruku, a koja nije bila ponukana nekim religioznim porivima. Ispred svog vremena bio je i njegov kolega košarkaš Ron Artest kada se kao igrač slavnih LA Lakersa 2011. odlučio nazvati Metta World Peace. Metta je budistička riječ koja označava prijateljstvo, ljubaznost prema svima, a prezime World Peace u prijevodu s engleskog znači svjetski mir.

- Promijenio sam ime kako bih inspirirao mlade diljem svijeta i pozvao na zajedništvo – kazao je tada Artest, ali više su ga zbog toga držali za redikula nego što je pobrao simpatija.

Od 2020. je Metta Sandiford-Artest. Tada je naime ponovno promijenio ime. Nemojte biti razočarani, dodatak Sandiford je samo suprugino prezime.     

Još jedan vrlo sličan košarkaški primjer datira s početka osamdesetih godina prošlog stoljeća. Te 1981. je košarkaš Golden State Warriorsa Lloyd Bernard Free koji je od mladosti imao nadimak “All-World” ime promijenio u - World B. Free.

No, vjerujte bilo je i mnogo bizarnijih promjena imena u sportu. John Holmes je promijenio ime u J.B. Holmes. Odlučio je da ga zovu po inicijalima (John Bradley) jer je ono prvotno ime dijelio s bivšim slavnim porno glumcem! Igrač američkog nogometa Mark Duper ime je 1985. promijenio u Mark Super Duper.

Bilo je i promjena spletom okolnosti. Walker Smith Jr. je boksao pod prijateljevom licencom. Prijatelj se zvao Ray Robinson. To je ime i ostavio, samo mu je dodao prefiks Sugar i pod tim neobičnim imenom izrastao je u jednog od najpoznatijih boksača svih vremena. Još jednom igraču američkog nogometa Sharmonu Shahu njegov imam dao je ime Karim Abdul-Jabbar. Nikakav problem ne bi vjerojatno to bio da ga već nije nekoliko desetljeća ranije uzeo slavni košarkaš koji ga je zbog toga tužio. Sud je naredio da Shah mora promijeniti ime, a 2000. godine se igrač odlučio na sličnu inačicu, postao je Abdul-Karim al-Jabbar.

Vjerske promjene

Najpoznatije promjene imena kod sportaša događale su se ipak najčešće iz religioznih razloga. Veliki Kareem Abdul-Jabbar, jedan od najboljih NBA centara svih vremena, do 1971. godine zvao se Lew Alcindor. Tada je prilikom preobraćenja na islam promijenio ime. Prezime Alcindor bilo je prezime robovlasnika koji je njegove pretke ugnjetavao. Slavni boksač Cassius Clay 1964. godine je nakon prelaska na islam i zbližavanja s “Islamskom nacijom” odlučio odbaciti svoje kako ga je također nazvao “robovsko ime” i postao je Muhammad Ali.

Kada je pokret “Black Lives Matter” nakon ubojstva Georgea Floyda 2020. godine postao mainstream između ostalog, klečanja na himnu, uzdignutih ruku, moderno je među NBA košarkašima u završnici sezone bilo i umjesto prezimena na dresu imati poruku.

Pa se tako umjesto prezimena Antetokounmpo, Tatum ili Morant na dresovima moglo vidjeti poruke “Equality” (u prijevodu s engleskog jednakost), “Black Lives Matter” ili “Enough” (dosta). Tada je Enes Kanter iz Bostona Celticsa na dresu nosio poruku “Freedom” (sloboda). Igrom slučaja, godinu i pol kasnije, i dalje turski centar nosi istu riječ na dresu. U međuvremenu je i službeno promijenio svoje ime u Enes Kanter Freedom.

Turski košarkaš i član slavnih Celticsa Kanter, koji je godinama poznat kao trn u oku turskih vlasti koje su mu oduzele putovnicu i učinile ga čovjekom bez domovine, konačno dobivanje američkog državljanstva koncem prošle godine proslavio je promjenom imena, točnije dodatkom. Od tada na njegovom zelenom ili bijelom dresu “Kelta” iznad broja 13 opet piše Freedom (Sloboda). Puno ime iskusnog centra sada je Enes Kanter Freedom.

Kanter je kao veliki protivnik turskog predsjednika Recepa Tayyipa Erdogana došao u nemilost tamošnjih vlasti. Govorio je kako se dugo stoga bojao čak i za vlastiti život. Kao veliki borac za ljudska prava kritizirao je i Kinu zbog situacije u Tibetu. Na utakmicama često nosi političke poruke. Tako je između ostalog imao i poruke “Oslobodite Tibet”, “Oslobodite Hong Kong”, a javno je tražio i bojkot skorašnjih Zimskih olimpijskih igara u Pekingu.

No, nije Kanter pardon Freedom jedini slučaj promjene imena među košarkašima kojom se željelo poslati poruku, a koja nije bila ponukana nekim religioznim porivima. Ispred svog vremena bio je i njegov kolega košarkaš Ron Artest kada se kao igrač slavnih LA Lakersa 2011. odlučio nazvati Metta World Peace. Metta je budistička riječ koja označava prijateljstvo, ljubaznost prema svima, a prezime World Peace u prijevodu s engleskog znači svjetski mir.

- Promijenio sam ime kako bih inspirirao mlade diljem svijeta i pozvao na zajedništvo – kazao je tada Artest, ali više su ga zbog toga držali za redikula nego što je pobrao simpatija.

Od 2020. je Metta Sandiford-Artest. Tada je naime ponovno promijenio ime. Nemojte biti razočarani, dodatak Sandiford je samo suprugino prezime.     

Još jedan vrlo sličan košarkaški primjer datira s početka osamdesetih godina prošlog stoljeća. Te 1981. je košarkaš Golden State Warriorsa Lloyd Bernard Free koji je od mladosti imao nadimak “All-World” ime promijenio u - World B. Free.

No, vjerujte bilo je i mnogo bizarnijih promjena imena u sportu. John Holmes je promijenio ime u J.B. Holmes. Odlučio je da ga zovu po inicijalima (John Bradley) jer je ono prvotno ime dijelio s bivšim slavnim porno glumcem! Igrač američkog nogometa Mark Duper ime je 1985. promijenio u Mark Super Duper.

Bilo je i promjena spletom okolnosti. Walker Smith Jr. je boksao pod prijateljevom licencom. Prijatelj se zvao Ray Robinson. To je ime i ostavio, samo mu je dodao prefiks Sugar i pod tim neobičnim imenom izrastao je u jednog od najpoznatijih boksača svih vremena. Još jednom igraču američkog nogometa Sharmonu Shahu njegov imam dao je ime Karim Abdul-Jabbar. Nikakav problem ne bi vjerojatno to bio da ga već nije nekoliko desetljeća ranije uzeo slavni košarkaš koji ga je zbog toga tužio. Sud je naredio da Shah mora promijeniti ime, a 2000. godine se igrač odlučio na sličnu inačicu, postao je Abdul-Karim al-Jabbar.

Vjerske promjene

Najpoznatije promjene imena kod sportaša događale su se ipak najčešće iz religioznih razloga. Veliki Kareem Abdul-Jabbar, jedan od najboljih NBA centara svih vremena, do 1971. godine zvao se Lew Alcindor. Tada je prilikom preobraćenja na islam promijenio ime. Prezime Alcindor bilo je prezime robovlasnika koji je njegove pretke ugnjetavao. Slavni boksač Cassius Clay 1964. godine je nakon prelaska na islam i zbližavanja s “Islamskom nacijom” odlučio odbaciti svoje kako ga je također nazvao “robovsko ime” i postao je Muhammad Ali.
