Sve je počelo s trovanjem hranom u lipnju kada je nekoliko stanovnika u pokrajini Manzanillo na jugu Kube moralo potražiti pomoć u bolnici. Njihovi simptomi su bili učestalo povraćanje i proljev. No malo zatim u bolnicu je počelo stizati sve više ljudi sa sličnim simptomima koji nisu bili na istoj zabavi, a utvrđeno je i da nisu jeli istu morsku hranu.
“Počeli su dolaziti u manjim grupama”, kazao je direktor bolnice Celia Sanchez Manduley Cesar Fonseca Rivero.
“Najprije ih je došlo pet, pa osam. To nije bilo normalno. U najtežim danima u bolnicu je dolazilo između 30 i 32 ljudi s jednakim simptomima.”
Iznenadni porast slučajeva dijareje inače nije normalna pojava u pokrajini Manzanillo, gdje zdravstveno osoblje opskrbljuje oboljele među kojima prevladavaju seljaci. Stanovnici okolnih krajeva često žive bez vodovoda i u ljetnim mjesecima se suočavaju sa jakim suncem i obilnim kišama.
Liječnici su najprije posumnjali da se ove godine suočavaju s mnogo opsežnijom pojavom oboljenja nego proteklih godina, ali još uvijek nisu znali o čemu se radi.
“Način i brzina širenja bolesti jasno nam je pokazao da se borimo s pojavom dosad jedinstvenih razmjera”, kazao je Manuel Santin Pena, direktor ureda za epidemiologiju na Kubi.
“Problem je bila kolera,” dodao je. Zadnje izbijanje kolere na Kubi je zabilježeno prije više od sto godina, i iako je iskorijenjena u svim razvijenim državama svijeta, prema podacima Svjetske zdravstvene organizacije (WHO), od njenih posljedica svake godine umire između 100 i 120 tisuća ljudi.
Prema raspoloživim podacima u toj otočnoj državi od kolere je oboljelo oko 110 ljudi, a bolest je odnijela tri života. Santin Pena odbacuje navode da kubanska vlada objavljuje mnogo niže službene brojke od stvarnih. Iako neki mediji pišu da se bolest širi i u ostale pokrajine, Santin Pena je to opovrgnuo.
U borbi za zaustavljanje bolesti u okolici Manzanilla zatvoreno je 12 zaraženih vodocrpilišta, a čistu vodu dovoze cisternama iz drugih krajeva. Ispred ulaza u bolnice postavili su vjedra vode i antibakterijske sapune u kojima posjetitelji moraju oprati ruke i očistiti cipele.

Sve je počelo s trovanjem hranom u lipnju kada je nekoliko stanovnika u pokrajini Manzanillo na jugu Kube moralo potražiti pomoć u bolnici. Njihovi simptomi su bili učestalo povraćanje i proljev. No malo zatim u bolnicu je počelo stizati sve više ljudi sa sličnim simptomima koji nisu bili na istoj zabavi, a utvrđeno je i da nisu jeli istu morsku hranu.
“Počeli su dolaziti u manjim grupama”, kazao je direktor bolnice Celia Sanchez Manduley Cesar Fonseca Rivero.
“Najprije ih je došlo pet, pa osam. To nije bilo normalno. U najtežim danima u bolnicu je dolazilo između 30 i 32 ljudi s jednakim simptomima.”
Iznenadni porast slučajeva dijareje inače nije normalna pojava u pokrajini Manzanillo, gdje zdravstveno osoblje opskrbljuje oboljele među kojima prevladavaju seljaci. Stanovnici okolnih krajeva često žive bez vodovoda i u ljetnim mjesecima se suočavaju sa jakim suncem i obilnim kišama.
Liječnici su najprije posumnjali da se ove godine suočavaju s mnogo opsežnijom pojavom oboljenja nego proteklih godina, ali još uvijek nisu znali o čemu se radi.
“Način i brzina širenja bolesti jasno nam je pokazao da se borimo s pojavom dosad jedinstvenih razmjera”, kazao je Manuel Santin Pena, direktor ureda za epidemiologiju na Kubi.
“Problem je bila kolera,” dodao je. Zadnje izbijanje kolere na Kubi je zabilježeno prije više od sto godina, i iako je iskorijenjena u svim razvijenim državama svijeta, prema podacima Svjetske zdravstvene organizacije (WHO), od njenih posljedica svake godine umire između 100 i 120 tisuća ljudi.
Prema raspoloživim podacima u toj otočnoj državi od kolere je oboljelo oko 110 ljudi, a bolest je odnijela tri života. Santin Pena odbacuje navode da kubanska vlada objavljuje mnogo niže službene brojke od stvarnih. Iako neki mediji pišu da se bolest širi i u ostale pokrajine, Santin Pena je to opovrgnuo.
U borbi za zaustavljanje bolesti u okolici Manzanilla zatvoreno je 12 zaraženih vodocrpilišta, a čistu vodu dovoze cisternama iz drugih krajeva. Ispred ulaza u bolnice postavili su vjedra vode i antibakterijske sapune u kojima posjetitelji moraju oprati ruke i očistiti cipele.
