Nakon šest godina istraživanja, znanstvenici sa Sveučilišta u Baselu i ETH Zurich u Švicarskoj, identificirali su potencijalno revolucionarno oružje u borbi protiv superbakterija: viruse koji mogu ciljati i eliminirati uspavane bakterije.

Bakterije ulaze u stanje mirovanja tijekom nedostatka hranjivih tvari ili stresa, štiteći se od vanjskih prijetnji poput virusa i antibiotika. Do sada je, unatoč brojnim pokušajima, pronalaženje bakteriofaga koji može napasti uspavane bakterije znanstvenicima bilo nedostižno.

Mikrobiolog Alexander Harms vjerovao u postojanje takvih bakteriofaga. „Međutim, s obzirom na ogroman broj bakteriofaga, uvijek sam bio uvjeren da je evolucija morala proizvesti neke koji se mogu probiti u uspavane bakterije, izjavio je. 

Studiju je objavio znanstveni časopis Nature Communications.

Harms i njegov tim otkrili su novi bakteriofag nazvan Paride na raspadajućem biljnom materijalu na jednom švicarskom groblju. Paride je pokazao učinkovitost protiv uobičajene bakterije Pseudomonas aeruginosa, poznate po uzročniku teških respiratornih bolesti, osobito u bolničkim uvjetima. Kombinacija Paridea s antibiotikom meropenemom rezultirala je izvanrednom eliminacijom P.aeruginosa od 99 posto u laboratorijskim testovima. Kombinacija se također pokazala učinkovitom u pokusima na miševima, naglašavajući njezin potencijalni klinički značaj.

„To pokazuje da naše otkriće nije samo laboratorijski artefakt, već bi moglo biti i klinički relevantno, ističe mikrobiologinja Enea Maffei. Sinergija između faga i antibiotika sugerira obećavajuću strategiju za borbu protiv bakterija otpornih na lijekove, osobito kada su u zaštitnom stanju mirovanja.

Nakon šest godina istraživanja, znanstvenici sa Sveučilišta u Baselu i ETH Zurich u Švicarskoj, identificirali su potencijalno revolucionarno oružje u borbi protiv superbakterija: viruse koji mogu ciljati i eliminirati uspavane bakterije.

Bakterije ulaze u stanje mirovanja tijekom nedostatka hranjivih tvari ili stresa, štiteći se od vanjskih prijetnji poput virusa i antibiotika. Do sada je, unatoč brojnim pokušajima, pronalaženje bakteriofaga koji može napasti uspavane bakterije znanstvenicima bilo nedostižno.

Mikrobiolog Alexander Harms vjerovao u postojanje takvih bakteriofaga. „Međutim, s obzirom na ogroman broj bakteriofaga, uvijek sam bio uvjeren da je evolucija morala proizvesti neke koji se mogu probiti u uspavane bakterije, izjavio je. 

Studiju je objavio znanstveni časopis Nature Communications.

Harms i njegov tim otkrili su novi bakteriofag nazvan Paride na raspadajućem biljnom materijalu na jednom švicarskom groblju. Paride je pokazao učinkovitost protiv uobičajene bakterije Pseudomonas aeruginosa, poznate po uzročniku teških respiratornih bolesti, osobito u bolničkim uvjetima. Kombinacija Paridea s antibiotikom meropenemom rezultirala je izvanrednom eliminacijom P.aeruginosa od 99 posto u laboratorijskim testovima. Nakon šest godina istraživanja, znanstvenici sa Sveučilišta u Baselu i ETH Zurich u Švicarskoj, identificirali su potencijalno revolucionarno oružje u borbi protiv superbakterija: viruse koji mogu ciljati i eliminirati uspavane bakterije.

Bakterije ulaze u stanje mirovanja tijekom nedostatka hranjivih tvari ili stresa, štiteći se od vanjskih prijetnji poput virusa i antibiotika. Do sada je, unatoč brojnim pokušajima, pronalaženje bakteriofaga koji može napasti uspavane bakterije znanstvenicima bilo nedostižno.

Mikrobiolog Alexander Harms vjerovao u postojanje takvih bakteriofaga. „Međutim, s obzirom na ogroman broj bakteriofaga, uvijek sam bio uvjeren da je evolucija morala proizvesti neke koji se mogu probiti u uspavane bakterije, izjavio je. 

Studiju je objavio znanstveni časopis Nature Communications.

Harms i njegov tim otkrili su novi bakteriofag nazvan Paride na raspadajućem biljnom materijalu na jednom švicarskom groblju. Paride je pokazao učinkovitost protiv uobičajene bakterije Pseudomonas aeruginosa, poznate po uzročniku teških respiratornih bolesti, osobito u bolničkim uvjetima. Kombinacija Paridea s antibiotikom meropenemom rezultirala je izvanrednom eliminacijom P.aeruginosa od 99 posto u laboratorijskim testovima. Kombinacija se također pokazala učinkovitom u pokusima na miševima, naglašavajući njezin potencijalni klinički značaj.
