Pripovjedač se budi u šumi koju natapa pljusak. Nosi večernje odijelo i grozničavo zove stanovitu Anne, premda nema pojma tko je ona i zašto to čini.

Štoviše, narator ne zna ni tko je on sâm, sva njegova sjećanja kao da je netko prebrisao krpom. Jedino čega je pouzdano i duboko svjestan jest goli, očajnički strah, za vlastiti život i život neznanke koju doziva. Nakon nekog vremena on će se dokopati velike ladanjske kuće koja pamti bolje dane te uskoro saznati da se zove Sebastian Bell, da je liječnik i da se upleo u intrigu čije obrise nije kadar razabrati.

Do ove točke “Sedam smrti Evelyn Hardcastle”, debitantski roman engleskog novinara Stuarta Turtona, podsjeća na klasični whodunit krimić po špranci Agathe Christie. Pravocrtna storija tada će skrenuti u oštru krivinu, kao da je autor poželio vidjeti što će se dogoditi ako križa staromodni engleski krimić s konceptom vremenske petlje koju pamtimo iz kultne romantične komedije “Beskrajni dan”. Samo što u našem slučaju ništa nije ni romantično ni komično.

Turtonov pripovjedač svakog će se jutra buditi u tuđem tijelu i uvijek iznova proživljavati jedan te isti dan, pokušavajući riješiti misterij smrti Evelyn Hardcastle. Osim kao liječnik, budit će se kao pretili bankar, pokorni batler, plejboj, odvjetnik, pozornik slikar... Zvuči komplicirano? I više nego što mislite. Taj nesretnik osuđen na reprizni život zove se Aiden Bishop i njegovu sudbinu odredit će maskirani zlokobni tip koji će mu objasniti da ima samo osam dana da riješi slučaj.

U suprotnom, dovijeka će ostati na imanju da stalno iznova proživljava jedan te isti dan. Bishopov pak položaj dodatno će otežati činjenica što su još dvije osobe u istoj situaciji, i one moraju razriješiti misterij ako žele otići, a u toj igri pobjednik može biti samo jedan.

Tu, međutim, ne prestaju muke kojima je autor izložio svoga junaka. Osim sa zlotvorom koji drži konce cijelog slučaja i s neposrednom konkurencijom, on se mora boriti i sa svojim “domaćinima” u čija se tijela jednokratno useljava. Jedan je od gojaznosti jedva pokretan, drugi je teško pretučen i u bolovima, treći je slabašni starac... No, nisu samo tjelesne zadatosti ono što Bishopa muči, jer osim fizičkih ograničenja, on mora i nadvladati i psihička, obuzdati teške naravi, mračne strasti i bizarne sklonosti ljudi čiji identitet preuzima na jedan dan.

Samo u Velikoj Britaniji ovaj roman prodan je u nakladi većoj od 200 tisuća primjeraka, preveden je k tome na 28 jezika, a prava na njegovu adaptaciju otkupila je tvrtka koja je producirala popularni serijal “Downton Abbey”. Povrh svega, pisac je dobitnik nagrade “Costa” u kategoriji debitanta, a to priznanje nadilazi uske žanrovske okvire, jer za njega ravnopravno konkuriraju svi autori s prebivalištem u Ujedinjenom Kraljevstvu i Irskoj, bez obzira na poetičke preferencije.

Nisam, međutim, siguran da mogu podijeliti opće oduševljenje ovim romanom. O da, radi se o knjizi koja je na mnogo načina fascinantna. Umijeće kojim je autor raspršio nebrojene pripovjedne konce, temeljito ih izmiješao, da bi ih onda u velikom finalu okupio u jedno cjelovito tkanje, zaista zaslužuje respekt. Ova knjiga sliči minucioznom Eiffelovu tornju što ga je neki zanesenjak izgradio od šibica.

No, izgradnja složene narativne strukture nije jedini talent kojim Turton raspolaže. On je i pisac kultivirane rečenice koja nadilazi skromne žanrovske standarde, autor funkcionalnog, ali vrlo sugestivnog stila. Pa u čemu je onda problem? Paradoksalno, u njegovoj najvećoj vrlini.

Turton se toliko posvetio obratima i narativnim driblinzima da se kroz knjigu teško probijati bez olovke i notesa, a i jedna starinska školska ploča dobro bi došla da se predoče svi pravci zapleta i petlje u kojima se križaju. Autor naprosto previše podsjeća na nogometnog fantazista koji je u igri jedan na jedan kadar svakoga ne samo nadjačati nego i poniziti, ali što mu to vrijedi kad na koncu zaboravi šutirati na gol.

“Sedam smrti Evelyn Hardcastle” (prijevod potpisuje Jelena Pataki) dojmljivo su svjedočanstvo što sve živ čovjek s viškom pripovjednog talenta i marljivosti može učiniti. No, ovaj je roman u isti mah zgodan podsjetnik kako onaj šaljivdžija koji se zezao na račun gospođe Agathe Christie nije bio sasvim u krivu. “Tko je ubio Rogera Ackroyda?” glasi naslov njezina klasičnog djela. “Koga briga tko je ubio Rogera Ackroyda?”, uzvratio je zločesti komentator, očito nesklon nabrijanim engimatskim krimićima od kojih čitateljima može uskuhati mozak. A takav je, bojim se, i Turtonov.•

Pripovjedač se budi u šumi koju natapa pljusak. Nosi večernje odijelo i grozničavo zove stanovitu Anne, premda nema pojma tko je ona i zašto to čini.

Štoviše, narator ne zna ni tko je on sâm, sva njegova sjećanja kao da je netko prebrisao krpom. Jedino čega je pouzdano i duboko svjestan jest goli, očajnički strah, za vlastiti život i život neznanke koju doziva. Nakon nekog vremena on će se dokopati velike ladanjske kuće koja pamti bolje dane te uskoro saznati da se zove Sebastian Bell, da je liječnik i da se upleo u intrigu čije obrise nije kadar razabrati.

Do ove točke “Sedam smrti Evelyn Hardcastle”, debitantski roman engleskog novinara Stuarta Turtona, podsjeća na klasični whodunit krimić po špranci Agathe Christie. Pravocrtna storija tada će skrenuti u oštru krivinu, kao da je autor poželio vidjeti što će se dogoditi ako križa staromodni engleski krimić s konceptom vremenske petlje koju pamtimo iz kultne romantične komedije “Beskrajni dan”. Samo što u našem slučaju ništa nije ni romantično ni komično.

Turtonov pripovjedač svakog će se jutra buditi u tuđem tijelu i uvijek iznova proživljavati jedan te isti dan, pokušavajući riješiti misterij smrti Evelyn Hardcastle. Osim kao liječnik, budit će se kao pretili bankar, pokorni batler, plejboj, odvjetnik, pozornik slikar... Zvuči komplicirano? I više nego što mislite. Taj nesretnik osuđen na reprizni život zove se Aiden Bishop i njegovu sudbinu odredit će maskirani zlokobni tip koji će mu objasniti da ima samo osam dana da riješi slučaj.

U suprotnom, dovijeka će ostati na imanju da stalno iznova proživljava jedan te isti dan. Bishopov pak položaj dodatno će otežati činjenica što su još dvije osobe u istoj situaciji, i one moraju razriješiti misterij ako žele otići, a u toj igri pobjednik može biti samo jedan.

Tu, međutim, ne prestaju muke kojima je autor izložio svoga junaka. Osim sa zlotvorom koji drži konce cijelog slučaja i s neposrednom konkurencijom, on se mora boriti i sa svojim “domaćinima” u čija se tijela jednokratno useljava. Jedan je od gojaznosti jedva pokretan, drugi je teško pretučen i u bolovima, treći je slabašni starac... No, nisu samo tjelesne zadatosti ono što Bishopa muči, jer osim fizičkih ograničenja, on mora i nadvladati i psihička, obuzdati teške naravi, mračne strasti i bizarne sklonosti ljudi čiji identitet preuzima na jedan dan.

Samo u Velikoj Britaniji ovaj roman prodan je u nakladi većoj od 200 tisuća primjeraka, preveden je k tome na 28 jezika, a prava na njegovu adaptaciju otkupila je tvrtka koja je producirala popularni serijal “Downton Abbey”. Povrh svega, pisac je dobitnik nagrade “Costa” u kategoriji debitanta, a to priznanje nadilazi uske žanrovske okvire, jer za njega ravnopravno konkuriraju svi autori s prebivalištem u Ujedinjenom Kraljevstvu i Irskoj, bez obzira na poetičke preferencije.

Nisam, međutim, siguran da mogu podijeliti opće oduševljenje ovim romanom. O da, radi se o knjizi koja je na mnogo načina fascinantna. Umijeće kojim je autor raspršio nebrojene pripovjedne konce, temeljito ih izmiješao, da bi ih onda u velikom finalu okupio u jedno cjelovito tkanje, zaista zaslužuje respekt. Ova knjiga sliči minucioznom Eiffelovu tornju što ga je neki zanesenjak izgradio od šibica.

No, izgradnja složene narativne strukture nije jedini talent kojim Turton raspolaže. On je i pisac kultivirane rečenice koja nadilazi skromne žanrovske standarde, autor funkcionalnog, ali vrlo sugestivnog stila. Pa u čemu je onda problem? Paradoksalno, u njegovoj najvećoj vrlini.

Turton se toliko posvetio obratima i narativnim driblinzima da se kroz knjigu teško probijati bez olovke i notesa, a i jedna starinska školska ploča dobro bi došla da se predoče svi pravci zapleta i petlje u kojima se križaju. Autor naprosto previše podsjeća na nogometnog fantazista koji je u igri jedan na jedan kadar svakoga ne samo nadjačati nego i poniziti, ali što mu to vrijedi kad na koncu zaboravi šutirati na gol.

“Sedam smrti Evelyn Hardcastle” (prijevod potpisuje Jelena Pataki) dojmljivo su svjedočanstvo što sve živ čovjek s viškom pripovjednog talenta i marljivosti može učiniti. No, ovaj je roman u isti mah zgodan podsjetnik kako onaj šaljivdžija koji se zezao na račun gospođe Agathe Christie nije bio sasvim u krivu. “Tko je ubio Rogera Ackroyda?” glasi naslov njezina klasičnog djela. “Koga briga tko je ubio Rogera Ackroyda?”, uzvratio je zločesti komentator, očito nesklon nabrijanim engimatskim krimićima od kojih čitateljima može uskuhati mozak. A takav je, bojim se, i Turtonov.•

Pripovjedač se budi u šumi koju natapa pljusak. Nosi večernje odijelo i grozničavo zove stanovitu Anne, premda nema pojma tko je ona i zašto to čini.

Štoviše, narator ne zna ni tko je on sâm, sva njegova sjećanja kao da je netko prebrisao krpom.
