Radijski voditelji povremeno budu protagonisti filmova kao što su, primjerice, “Talk Radio”, “Dobro jutro, Vijetname”, “Pump Up The Volume”, “Kralj etera”... No, rijetko su i protagonisti trilera (“Jeza u noći”), iako su filmovi o njima mogli biti dijelom i trilerski, sjetimo li se npr. “Kralja ribara”, u kojem je radijski voditelj nenamjerno inicirao pokolj u režiji mentalno nestabilna slušatelja.

Upravo je zbog toga “Vruća linija” (“On The Air”) djelovala kao osvježenje, triler s radijskim voditeljem noćne emisije u tumačenju Mela Gibsona kao glavnog lika, koji bi zbog njega možda mogao imati i prefiks “akcijski”. Ovo “glavnim” treba dodatno istaknuti.

Jer, Gibson posljednjih deset godina češće glumi sporedne uloge (“Plaćenici 3”, “Machete ubija”, “Tatica se vratio 2”, “Sila prirode”, “Zločin u Hollywoodu”, “Mjesto usijanja”...), a nerijetko i epizodne (“Boss Level”, “Panama”), za razliku od glavnih (“Uhvati gringa”, “Krvna osveta”, “Dva lica zakona”, “Kako se riješiti Djeda Mraza”). Iako legendarni “tough guy” glumac nije u naponu snage kao osamdesetih i devedesetih, još uvijek je kadar nositi i iznijeti film svojom pojavom i karizmom.

Nitko od “Vruće linije” nije očekivao (akcijski) triler na razini Gibsonove “Ucjene”, “Vraćanja duga” ili “Urote”, ali jest barem nešto bolje od njegovog posljednjeg trilera, neovisno o tome što s njim opet glumi Kevin Dillon, brat poznatijeg Matta, uz niz (mladih) anonimusa, ne računajući Enriquea Arcea, Artura iz serije “La casa de papel”. “On The Line” je bolji od “The Hot Seat”, no daleko od toga da je dobar, premda je posjedovao zametak trilerskog “high concept” potencijala.

Nakon lažne uzbune i krivog usmjeravanja u uvodnoj sceni, kapanja krvi koja to nije, slijedi susret radijskog voditelja Elvisa Cooneyja (zamalo Clooney) sa slušateljem uvjerenim da je Isus i želi poslati svoju poruku preko radija. Situacija je mogla eskalirati kad ga je ovaj dočekao u predvorju radija, ali Elvis se snašao i riješio problem na miran način.

To je preludij za skorašnju centralnu situaciju. Slušatelj po imenu Gary zaprijeti da će ubiti Elvisovu obitelj i tvrdi da drži njegovu suprugu i kćerku kao taoce. Tko je Gary i što hoće? Čini se da nešto zamjera Elvisu i želi mu se osvetiti i navesti ga da pati, izazivajući da u eteru prizna ljubavnu aferu s mladom kolegicom Mary (Alia Seror-O’Neill) itd.

Prvih pola sata misterij raste, tenzija također, i izgleda da bi “Vruća linija” mogla postati varijacija na lokacijski i situacijski svedene napetice kao što su “Na rubu”, danska “Krivnja” i njezin istoimeni američki remake, triler u kojem će radijski eter postati ispovjedaonica glavnog lika, poput telefonske govornice iz istoimenog filma Joela Schumachera. Gary preko telefona zvuči poput Ghostfacea i povremeno ispali neku zgodnu rečenicu, tipa “Koji bi te glumac glumio u filmu o ovome? Tom Cruise? Mene bi Joaquin Phoenix, osjećam se večeras kao Joker”.

Međutim, svedeni trilerski momentum se gubi kad se ispostavi da Gary nadgleda situaciju preko kamera i Elvis napusti radijsku kabinu, zamalo i zgradu nakon što ga negativac prisili da skoči s krova, makar je bilo jasno kao dan da neće skočiti jer je tek 40. minuta i priča nije dosegla finale “Igre”. No, “The Game” je imao smisleni završni preokret koji je već ionako sjajan film podigao na višu razinu. Besmisleni “twist” ruinira “On The Air”, ostavljajući triler u eteru autoparodije.

Radijski voditelji povremeno budu protagonisti filmova kao što su, primjerice, “Talk Radio”, “Dobro jutro, Vijetname”, “Pump Up The Volume”, “Kralj etera”... No, rijetko su i protagonisti trilera (“Jeza u noći”), iako su filmovi o njima mogli biti dijelom i trilerski, sjetimo li se npr. “Kralja ribara”, u kojem je radijski voditelj nenamjerno inicirao pokolj u režiji mentalno nestabilna slušatelja.

Upravo je zbog toga “Vruća linija” (“On The Air”) djelovala kao osvježenje, triler s radijskim voditeljem noćne emisije u tumačenju Mela Gibsona kao glavnog lika, koji bi zbog njega možda mogao imati i prefiks “akcijski”. Ovo “glavnim” treba dodatno istaknuti.

Jer, Gibson posljednjih deset godina češće glumi sporedne uloge (“Plaćenici 3”, “Machete ubija”, “Tatica se vratio 2”, “Sila prirode”, “Zločin u Hollywoodu”, “Mjesto usijanja”...), a nerijetko i epizodne (“Boss Level”, “Panama”), za razliku od glavnih (“Uhvati gringa”, “Krvna osveta”, “Dva lica zakona”, “Kako se riješiti Djeda Mraza”). Iako legendarni “tough guy” glumac nije u naponu snage kao osamdesetih i devedesetih, još uvijek je kadar nositi i iznijeti film svojom pojavom i karizmom.

Nitko od “Vruće linije” nije očekivao (akcijski) triler na razini Gibsonove “Ucjene”, “Vraćanja duga” ili “Urote”, ali jest barem nešto bolje od njegovog posljednjeg trilera, neovisno o tome što s njim opet glumi Kevin Dillon, brat poznatijeg Matta, uz niz (mladih) anonimusa, ne računajući Enriquea Arcea, Artura iz serije “La casa de papel”. “On The Line” je bolji od “The Hot Seat”, no daleko od toga da je dobar, premda je posjedovao zametak trilerskog “high concept” potencijala.

Nakon lažne uzbune i krivog usmjeravanja u uvodnoj sceni, kapanja krvi koja to nije, slijedi susret radijskog voditelja Elvisa Cooneyja (zamalo Clooney) sa slušateljem uvjerenim da je Isus i želi poslati svoju poruku preko radija. Situacija je mogla eskalirati kad ga je ovaj dočekao u predvorju radija, ali Elvis se snašao i riješio problem na miran način.

To je preludij za skorašnju centralnu situaciju. Slušatelj po imenu Gary zaprijeti da će ubiti Elvisovu obitelj i tvrdi da drži njegovu suprugu i kćerku kao taoce. Tko je Gary i što hoće? Čini se da nešto zamjera Elvisu i želi mu se osvetiti i navesti ga da pati, izazivajući da u eteru prizna ljubavnu aferu s mladom kolegicom Mary (Alia Seror-O’Neill) itd.

Prvih pola sata misterij raste, tenzija također, i izgleda da bi “Vruća linija” mogla postati varijacija na lokacijski i situacijski svedene napetice kao što su “Na rubu”, danska “Krivnja” i njezin istoimeni američki remake, triler u kojem će radijski eter postati ispovjedaonica glavnog lika, poput telefonske govornice iz istoimenog filma Joela Schumachera. Gary preko telefona zvuči poput Ghostfacea i povremeno ispali neku zgodnu rečenicu, tipa “Koji bi te glumac glumio u filmu o ovome? Tom Cruise? Mene bi Joaquin Phoenix, osjećam se večeras kao Joker”.

Međutim, svedeni trilerski momentum se gubi kad se ispostavi da Gary nadgleda situaciju preko kamera i Elvis napusti radijsku kabinu, zamalo i zgradu nakon što ga negativac prisili da skoči s krova, makar je bilo jasno kao dan da neće skočiti jer je tek 40. minuta i priča nije dosegla finale “Igre”. No, “The Game” je imao smisleni završni preokret koji je već ionako sjajan film podigao na višu razinu. Besmisleni “twist” ruinira “On The Air”, ostavljajući triler u eteru autoparodije.
