Zahvaljujući satelitskim promatranjima znanstvenici su prvi put uspjeli detektirati istjecanje velike količine metana, štetnog stakleničkog plina, s jedne platforme na moru, pokazuje nedavno provedeno istraživanje.

Otkriće je napredak u tehnološkom arsenalu koji omogućuje da se iz svemira identificira izvor istjecanja metana, plina karakterističnog za industriju fosilnih goriva.

U 2020. godini sektor fosilnih goriva ispustio je gotovo 120 milijuna tona metana, što je gotovo trećina emisija povezanih s ljudskim aktivnostima, podaci su Međunarodne agencije za energiju (IEA).

Istjecanje metana, iznimno štetnog plina za klimu Zemlje, moglo bi se izbjeći na jednostavan način, smatra IEA.

Nova studija, objavljena u časopisu Environmental Science and Technology Letters, uspjela je prvi put identificirati oblak iznad platforme za proizvodnju plina i nafte u Meksičkom zaljevu s koje je u prosincu u 17 dana iscurilo oko 40.000 tona metana. 

Platforma u blizini Campechea u južnome Meksiku jedna je od najvećih u zemlji.

"Rezultati naših istraživanja ukazuju na to da se satelitima uspješno mogu otkriti tragovi metana koji cure s platformi", rekao je jedan od autora studije, Luis Guanter, znanstvenik s Politehničkog sveučilišta u Valenciji.

"Ovo bi saznanje moglo otvoriti put sustavnom praćenju emisija plina štetnog za klimu upravo s morskih platformi", dodao je. 

Posljednjih godina uspješno su razvijene metode detekcije istjecanja metana iz postrojenja na kopnu zahvaljujući satelitskom praćenju. No dosad dostupne tehnike nisu bile u stanju prepoznati istjecanje metana s platformi na morima i oceanima, a poznato je da je riječ o približno 30 posto svjetske proizvodnje.

Oceani apsorbiraju kratkovalne infracrvene zrake i stoga ograničavaju količinu reflektirane svjetlosti koju sateliti mogu otkriti.

Da bi premostili ovaj problem, znanstvenici su uspjeli razviti novu metodu mjerenja sunčeva zračenja koje se reflektira na morskoj površini.

Metan je odgovoran za oko 30 posto globalnog zatopljenja.

Premda se u atmosferi zadržava puno kraće od ugljikova dioksida, u dvadesetgodišnjem razdoblju moć utjecaja metana na globalno zatopljenje je 80 puta veća.

Stoga je smanjenje emisije metana ključno za postizanje ciljeva Pariškog sporazuma o ograničenju globalnog zatopljenja na manje od +2°C u odnosu na predindustrijsko razdoblje, po mogućnosti ispod +1,5°C. 

Na klimatskoj konferenciji UN-a COP26 održanoj u studenome u Glasgowu više od 100 država obećalo je da će se angažirati na smanjenju emisije metana za 30 posto do 2030. godine.

No nekoliko velikih emitera metana, poput Kine, Rusije, Irana i Indije, sporazum nije potpisalo.

Zahvaljujući satelitskim promatranjima znanstvenici su prvi put uspjeli detektirati istjecanje velike količine metana, štetnog stakleničkog plina, s jedne platforme na moru, pokazuje nedavno provedeno istraživanje.

Otkriće je napredak u tehnološkom arsenalu koji omogućuje da se iz svemira identificira izvor istjecanja metana, plina karakterističnog za industriju fosilnih goriva.

U 2020. godini sektor fosilnih goriva ispustio je gotovo 120 milijuna tona metana, što je gotovo trećina emisija povezanih s ljudskim aktivnostima, podaci su Međunarodne agencije za energiju (IEA).

Istjecanje metana, iznimno štetnog plina za klimu Zemlje, moglo bi se izbjeći na jednostavan način, smatra IEA.

Nova studija, objavljena u časopisu Environmental Science and Technology Letters, uspjela je prvi put identificirati oblak iznad platforme za proizvodnju plina i nafte u Meksičkom zaljevu s koje je u prosincu u 17 dana iscurilo oko 40.000 tona metana. 

Platforma u blizini Campechea u južnome Meksiku jedna je od najvećih u zemlji.

"Rezultati naših istraživanja ukazuju na to da se satelitima uspješno mogu otkriti tragovi metana koji cure s platformi", rekao je jedan od autora studije, Luis Guanter, znanstvenik s Politehničkog sveučilišta u Valenciji.

"Ovo bi saznanje moglo otvoriti put sustavnom praćenju emisija plina štetnog za klimu upravo s morskih platformi", dodao je. 

Posljednjih godina uspješno su razvijene metode detekcije istjecanja metana iz postrojenja na kopnu zahvaljujući satelitskom praćenju. No dosad dostupne tehnike nisu bile u stanju prepoznati istjecanje metana s platformi na morima i oceanima, a poznato je da je riječ o približno 30 posto svjetske proizvodnje.

Oceani apsorbiraju kratkovalne infracrvene zrake i stoga ograničavaju količinu reflektirane svjetlosti koju sateliti mogu otkriti.

Da bi premostili ovaj problem, znanstvenici su uspjeli razviti novu metodu mjerenja sunčeva zračenja koje se reflektira na morskoj površini.

Metan je odgovoran za oko 30 posto globalnog zatopljenja.

Premda se u atmosferi zadržava puno kraće od ugljikova dioksida, u dvadesetgodišnjem razdoblju moć utjecaja metana na globalno zatopljenje je 80 puta veća.

Stoga je smanjenje emisije metana ključno za postizanje ciljeva Pariškog sporazuma o ograničenju globalnog zatopljenja na manje od +2°C u odnosu na predindustrijsko razdoblje, po mogućnosti ispod +1,5°C. 

Na klimatskoj konferenciji UN-a COP26 održanoj u studenome u Glasgowu više od 100 država obećalo je da će se angažirati na smanjenju emisije metana za 30 posto do 2030. godine.

No nekoliko velikih emitera metana, poput Kine, Rusije, Irana i Indije, sporazum nije potpisalo.

Zahvaljujući satelitskim promatranjima znanstvenici su prvi put uspjeli detektirati istjecanje velike količine metana, štetnog stakleničkog plina, s jedne platforme na moru, pokazuje nedavno provedeno istraživanje.

Otkriće je napredak u tehnološkom arsenalu koji omogućuje da se iz svemira identificira izvor istjecanja metana, plina karakterističnog za industriju fosilnih goriva.

U 2020. godini sektor fosilnih goriva ispustio je gotovo 120 milijuna tona metana, što je gotovo trećina emisija povezanih s ljudskim aktivnostima, podaci su Međunarodne agencije za energiju (IEA).

Istjecanje metana, iznimno štetnog plina za klimu Zemlje, moglo bi se izbjeći na jednostavan način, smatra IEA.

Nova studija, objavljena u časopisu Environmental Science and Technology Letters, uspjela je prvi put identificirati oblak iznad platforme za proizvodnju plina i nafte u Meksičkom zaljevu s koje je u prosincu u 17 dana iscurilo oko 40.000 tona metana. 

Platforma u blizini Campechea u južnome Meksiku jedna je od najvećih u zemlji.

"Rezultati naših istraživanja ukazuju na to da se satelitima uspješno mogu otkriti tragovi metana koji cure s platformi", rekao je jedan od autora studije, Luis Guanter, znanstvenik s Politehničkog sveučilišta u Valenciji.

"Ovo bi saznanje moglo otvoriti put sustavnom praćenju emisija plina štetnog za klimu upravo s morskih platformi", dodao je. 

Posljednjih godina uspješno su razvijene metode detekcije istjecanja metana iz postrojenja na kopnu zahvaljujući satelitskom praćenju. No dosad dostupne tehnike nisu bile u stanju prepoznati istjecanje metana s platformi na morima i oceanima, a poznato je da je riječ o približno 30 posto svjetske proizvodnje.

Oceani apsorbiraju kratkovalne infracrvene zrake i stoga ograničavaju količinu reflektirane svjetlosti koju sateliti mogu otkriti.

Da bi premostili ovaj problem, znanstvenici su uspjeli razviti novu metodu mjerenja sunčeva zračenja koje se reflektira na morskoj površini.

Metan je odgovoran za oko 30 posto globalnog zatopljenja.

Premda se u atmosferi zadržava puno kraće od ugljikova dioksida, u dvadesetgodišnjem razdoblju moć utjecaja metana na globalno zatopljenje je 80 puta veća.

Stoga je smanjenje emisije metana ključno za postizanje ciljeva Pariškog sporazuma o ograničenju globalnog zatopljenja na manje od +2°C u odnosu na predindustrijsko razdoblje, po mogućnosti ispod +1,5°C. 

Na klimatskoj konferenciji UN-a COP26 održanoj u studenome u Glasgowu više od 100 država obećalo je da će se angažirati na smanjenju emisije metana za 30 posto do 2030. godine.

No nekoliko velikih emitera metana, poput Kine, Rusije, Irana i Indije, sporazum nije potpisalo.
