Iako je Robert Ballard studirao i diplomirao geologiju i kemiju, od djetinjstva ga je okupirala jaka želja da se bavi nečim što bi ga odvelo u morske dubine.

Služeći vojni rok u Američkoj mornarici i radeći za Oceanografski institut, prvi put je došao u priliku da se bavi dubina ma i morskim dnom, te je ubrzo shvatio da ga zanima podvodna arheologija.

Nakon odsluženja vojnog roka često je surađivao s US Navy, pa joj se obratio i za pomoć u potrazi za Titanicom, ali nisu pokazali interes za to.

No, bilo im jako stalo da pronađu svoje dvije nuklearne podmornice, Scorpion i Tresher, potopljene šezdesetih godina prošlog stoljeća.

Zanimalo ih je u kakvom su stanju njihovi nuklearni reaktori nakon toliko godina na dnu mora.

Za tu operaciju trebao im je čovjek s Ballardovim iskustvom i znanjem, a on je pristao pomoći pod uvjetom da mu, ako pronađe podmornice, zauzvrat stave batiskaf Alvin na ras polaganje za traženje Titanica.

Nakon pronalaska obiju podmornica, Ballard je konačno imao mogućnosti posvetiti se starom snu, koji je ostvario 1. rujna 1985. kada je, predvodeći mješovitu francusko-ame ričku ekspediciju, pronašao olupinu Titanica.

Iako je Robert Ballard studirao i diplomirao geologiju i kemiju, od djetinjstva ga je okupirala jaka želja da se bavi nečim što bi ga odvelo u morske dubine.

Služeći vojni rok u Američkoj mornarici i radeći za Oceanografski institut, prvi put je došao u priliku da se bavi dubina ma i morskim dnom, te je ubrzo shvatio da ga zanima podvodna arheologija.

Nakon odsluženja vojnog roka često je surađivao s US Navy, pa joj se obratio i za pomoć u potrazi za Titanicom, ali nisu pokazali interes za to.

No, bilo im jako stalo da pronađu svoje dvije nuklearne podmornice, Scorpion i Tresher, potopljene šezdesetih godina prošlog stoljeća.

Zanimalo ih je u kakvom su stanju njihovi nuklearni reaktori nakon toliko godina na dnu mora.

Za tu operaciju trebao im je čovjek s Ballardovim iskustvom i znanjem, a on je pristao pomoći pod uvjetom da mu, ako pronađe podmornice, zauzvrat stave batiskaf Alvin na ras polaganje za traženje Titanica.

Nakon pronalaska obiju podmornica, Ballard je konačno imao mogućnosti posvetiti se starom snu, koji je ostvario 1. rujna 1985. kada je, predvodeći mješovitu francusko-ame ričku ekspediciju, pronašao olupinu Titanica.

Iako je Robert Ballard studirao i diplomirao geologiju i kemiju, od djetinjstva ga je okupirala jaka želja da se bavi nečim što bi ga odvelo u morske dubine.

Kaže da je za to kriva knjiga "20.000 milja pod morem" Julesa Vernea.

Služeći vojni rok u Američkoj mornarici i radeći za Oceanografski institut, prvi put je došao u priliku da se bavi dubina ma i morskim dnom, te je ubrzo shvatio da ga zanima podvodna arheologija.

Nakon odsluženja vojnog roka često je surađivao s US Navy, pa joj se obratio i za pomoć u potrazi za Titanicom, ali nisu pokazali interes za to.

No, bilo im jako stalo da pronađu svoje dvije nuklearne podmornice, Scorpion i Tresher, potopljene šezdesetih godina prošlog stoljeća.

Zanimalo ih je u kakvom su stanju njihovi nuklearni reaktori nakon toliko godina na dnu mora.

Za tu operaciju trebao im je čovjek s Ballardovim iskustvom i znanjem, a on je pristao pomoći pod uvjetom da mu, ako pronađe podmornice, zauzvrat stave batiskaf Alvin na ras polaganje za traženje Titanica.

Nakon pronalaska obiju podmornica, Ballard je konačno imao mogućnosti posvetiti se starom snu, koji je ostvario 1. rujna 1985. kada je, predvodeći mješovitu francusko-ame ričku ekspediciju, pronašao olupinu Titanica.
