Znanstvenici su iz litica jurske obale Dorseta iskopali lubanju golemog morskog čudovišta - pliosaura, morskog reptila koji je terorizirao oceane prije otprilike 150 milijuna godina.

Ova lubanja, duga 2 metra, jedna je od najcjelovitijih primjeraka te vrste ikada otkrivenih te je stručnjacima pružila bolji uvid u način života ovog drevnog grabežljivca. "To je jedan od najboljih fosila na kojima sam ikada radio. Jedinstveno je to što je kompletan", rekao je za BBC lokalni paleontolog Steve Etches, a prenosi Index. 

"Donja čeljust i gornja lubanja su spojene, kao što je bilo i za života pliosaura. Sumnjam da na svijetu postoji primjerak fosila s ovom razinom detalja. A čak i da postoji, obično nedostaje neki dio. Na ovom fosilu je sačuvana svaka kost", dodao je.  

Lubanja je veća od većine ljudi, a na njoj je ostalo 130 zubi. Prednji su dugi i oštri poput žileta. Sam pliosaur je bio dugačak između 10 i 12 metara. Imao je četiri snažna uda nalik perajama pomoću kojih se mogao kretati velikim brzinama kroz ocean.

"Ova životinja je bila toliko masivna da je mogla uloviti sve na što je naišla. Bila je poput podvodnog T. rexa", kazao je paleontolog Andre Rowe sa Sveučilišta Bristol. Pliosaur je znao pojesti i razne gmazove ili čak i druge pliosaure. 

Njuška fosila je prošarana malim rupicama u kojima su se možda nalazile žlijezde koje su mu pomagale registrirati promjenu u tlaku vode koje stvara potencijalni plijen. A na glavi mu je rupa u kojoj se nalazilo parijetalno, ili treće oko kakvog danas imaju neki gušteri, žabe i ribe. 

Radi se o oku koje reagira na svjetlost i koje je vjerojatno služilo pliosauru pri lovu na druge životinje, posebno kada je izranjao iz dubokih, mutnih voda. Etches je uvjeren da se u liticama skriva ostatak morskog "čudovišta". "Kladim se da je tako. Ovaj dio litice brzo erodira. Neće proći dugo prije nego što osvane ostatak pliosaura. To je prilika koja se pruža jednom u životu", rekao je.

Znanstvenici su iz litica jurske obale Dorseta iskopali lubanju golemog morskog čudovišta - pliosaura, morskog reptila koji je terorizirao oceane prije otprilike 150 milijuna godina.

Ova lubanja, duga 2 metra, jedna je od najcjelovitijih primjeraka te vrste ikada otkrivenih te je stručnjacima pružila bolji uvid u način života ovog drevnog grabežljivca. "To je jedan od najboljih fosila na kojima sam ikada radio. Jedinstveno je to što je kompletan", rekao je za BBC lokalni paleontolog Steve Etches, a prenosi Index. 

"Donja čeljust i gornja lubanja su spojene, kao što je bilo i za života pliosaura. Sumnjam da na svijetu postoji primjerak fosila s ovom razinom detalja. A čak i da postoji, obično nedostaje neki dio. Na ovom fosilu je sačuvana svaka kost", dodao je.  

Lubanja je veća od većine ljudi, a na njoj je ostalo 130 zubi. Prednji su dugi i oštri poput žileta. Sam pliosaur je bio dugačak između 10 i 12 metara. Imao je četiri snažna uda nalik perajama pomoću kojih se mogao kretati velikim brzinama kroz ocean.

"Ova životinja je bila toliko masivna da je mogla uloviti sve na što je naišla. Bila je poput podvodnog T. rexa", kazao je paleontolog Andre Rowe sa Sveučilišta Bristol. Pliosaur je znao pojesti i razne gmazove ili čak i druge pliosaure. 

Njuška fosila je prošarana malim rupicama u kojima su se možda nalazile žlijezde koje su mu pomagale registrirati promjenu u tlaku vode koje stvara potencijalni plijen. A na glavi mu je rupa u kojoj se nalazilo parijetalno, ili treće oko kakvog danas imaju neki gušteri, žabe i ribe. 

Radi se o oku koje reagira na svjetlost i koje je vjerojatno služilo pliosauru pri lovu na druge životinje, posebno kada je izranjao iz dubokih, mutnih voda. Etches je uvjeren da se u liticama skriva ostatak morskog "čudovišta". "Kladim se da je tako. Ovaj dio litice brzo erodira. Neće proći dugo prije nego što osvane ostatak pliosaura. To je prilika koja se pruža jednom u životu", rekao je.

Znanstvenici su iz litica jurske obale Dorseta iskopali lubanju golemog morskog čudovišta - pliosaura, morskog reptila koji je terorizirao oceane prije otprilike 150 milijuna godina.

Ova lubanja, duga 2 metra, jedna je od najcjelovitijih primjeraka te vrste ikada otkrivenih te je stručnjacima pružila bolji uvid u način života ovog drevnog grabežljivca. "To je jedan od najboljih fosila na kojima sam ikada radio. Jedinstveno je to što je kompletan", rekao je za BBC lokalni paleontolog Steve Etches, a prenosi Index. 

"Donja čeljust i gornja lubanja su spojene, kao što je bilo i za života pliosaura. Sumnjam da na svijetu postoji primjerak fosila s ovom razinom detalja. A čak i da postoji, obično nedostaje neki dio. Na ovom fosilu je sačuvana svaka kost", dodao je.  

Lubanja je veća od većine ljudi, a na njoj je ostalo 130 zubi. Prednji su dugi i oštri poput žileta. Sam pliosaur je bio dugačak između 10 i 12 metara. Imao je četiri snažna uda nalik perajama pomoću kojih se mogao kretati velikim brzinama kroz ocean. 

"Ova životinja je bila toliko masivna da je mogla uloviti sve na što je naišla. Bila je poput podvodnog T. rexa", kazao je paleontolog Andre Rowe sa Sveučilišta Bristol. Pliosaur je znao pojesti i razne gmazove ili čak i druge pliosaure. 

Njuška fosila je prošarana malim rupicama u kojima su se možda nalazile žlijezde koje su mu pomagale registrirati promjenu u tlaku vode koje stvara potencijalni plijen. A na glavi mu je rupa u kojoj se nalazilo parijetalno, ili treće oko kakvog danas imaju neki gušteri, žabe i ribe. 

Radi se o oku koje reagira na svjetlost i koje je vjerojatno služilo pliosauru pri lovu na druge životinje, posebno kada je izranjao iz dubokih, mutnih voda. Etches je uvjeren da se u liticama skriva ostatak morskog "čudovišta". "Kladim se da je tako. Ovaj dio litice brzo erodira. Neće proći dugo prije nego što osvane ostatak pliosaura. To je prilika koja se pruža jednom u životu", rekao je.
