U zadnje nam vrijeme barem jednom mjesečno dolaze informacije iz nekog dijela svijeta o pomoru životinja, najčešće morskih. Tisuće riba čija su tijela isplivala na površinu, mrtvi dupini na idiličnim pješčanim plažama, morski lavovi koji se ne sunčaju na stijenama, nego tamo umiru... Najnoviji slučaj dolazi iz Kalifornije, u kojoj more na obalu izbacuje tijela mrtvih morskih lavova i dupina. Nije riječ o ponekoj mrtvoj životinji, nego nečem puno, puno ozbiljnijem.

- Svakim danom je sve gore. Dobivamo 30 do 60 prijava o ozlijeđenim ili mrtvim životinjama svakog sata i više od 300 prijava dnevno - rekla je za Guardian Ruth Dover, suosnivačica Instituta za more i divlje životinje Kanalskih otoka.

Ovoga puta, na svu sreću, krivci nismo mi, nego jedna alga. Doduše, moguće je da smo joj svojim ponašanjem pomogli u tome da se ona ovako ponaša. Njeno ime je pseudo-nitzschia i proizvodi aminokiselinu koja može djelovati kao neurotoksin. Ona je u normalnim uvjetima bezopasna, no, vode oceana mogu dovesti do toga da ona postane pogubna.

Prošle godine ta je alga skrivila bolest među brojnim morskim stvorenjima, no ove je godine situacija gora nego ikada. Smatra se da je Santa Barbara žarište ovogodišnje epidemije, a problem je što više od 70 tisuća ženki dolazi na otočje u tom području da bi na svijet donijelo mlade. Ona u normalnim uvjetima nije opasna, no, promjene oceanske vode mogu dovesti do sasvim blage neravnoteže u omjeru tvari u moru i onda dolazi do ovakve situacije. Ravnotežu može poremetiti mnogo toga - od vulkana pod morem, pojava poput El Nina, manjka nutrijenata koje alge trebaju, ali i otpadnih voda.

Cvjetanje je ove godine već uzelo danak: znamo za oko tisuću umirućih, bolesnih i mrtvih morskih lavova, kao i 110 dupina. No, te brojke nisu posve točne jer se za mnoge životinje nikada ni ne sazna da su umrle. Ova brojka odnosi se na one koje su ljudi pronašli, a tko zna koliko ih je još u moru.

I dok neke životinje nisu ugrožene, druge nastradaju jer se hrane onima na koje aminokiseline utječu. Riječ je o prehrambenom lancu: alge pojedu ribe, njih pojedu morski lavovi, a oni pak kroz mlijeko svojim mladima izlučuju neurotoksine. Nije samo riječ o njima - ova alga utječe i na ribe, dupine i ljude.

- Morski lavovi su zapravo kanarinci u rudniku ugljena. Oni nam pokazuju sve poremećaje u našem okolišu - rekao je Dan Costa, direktor Instituta za znanost o moru i istaknuti profesor na Sveučilištu Santa Cruz.

Na svu sreću, smrti morskih stvorenja dovele su do reakcija. S jedne strane ljudi obilaze plaže i pretražuju more, tražeći životinje koje su još žive, kako bi im pomogli. Znanstvenici istražuju zašto i kada alge počinju štetno cvjetati, kako bi se to izbjeglo, a u San Franciscu je nedavno pokrenut program recikliranja otpadnih voda, kako one ne bi završile u moru.

U zadnje nam vrijeme barem jednom mjesečno dolaze informacije iz nekog dijela svijeta o pomoru životinja, najčešće morskih. Tisuće riba čija su tijela isplivala na površinu, mrtvi dupini na idiličnim pješčanim plažama, morski lavovi koji se ne sunčaju na stijenama, nego tamo umiru... Najnoviji slučaj dolazi iz Kalifornije, u kojoj more na obalu izbacuje tijela mrtvih morskih lavova i dupina. Nije riječ o ponekoj mrtvoj životinji, nego nečem puno, puno ozbiljnijem.

- Svakim danom je sve gore. Dobivamo 30 do 60 prijava o ozlijeđenim ili mrtvim životinjama svakog sata i više od 300 prijava dnevno - rekla je za Guardian Ruth Dover, suosnivačica Instituta za more i divlje životinje Kanalskih otoka.

Ovoga puta, na svu sreću, krivci nismo mi, nego jedna alga. Doduše, moguće je da smo joj svojim ponašanjem pomogli u tome da se ona ovako ponaša. Njeno ime je pseudo-nitzschia i proizvodi aminokiselinu koja može djelovati kao neurotoksin. Ona je u normalnim uvjetima bezopasna, no, vode oceana mogu dovesti do toga da ona postane pogubna.

Prošle godine ta je alga skrivila bolest među brojnim morskim stvorenjima, no ove je godine situacija gora nego ikada. Smatra se da je Santa Barbara žarište ovogodišnje epidemije, a problem je što više od 70 tisuća ženki dolazi na otočje u tom području da bi na svijet donijelo mlade. Ona u normalnim uvjetima nije opasna, no, promjene oceanske vode mogu dovesti do sasvim blage neravnoteže u omjeru tvari u moru i onda dolazi do ovakve situacije. Ravnotežu može poremetiti mnogo toga - od vulkana pod morem, pojava poput El Nina, manjka nutrijenata koje alge trebaju, ali i otpadnih voda.

Cvjetanje je ove godine već uzelo danak: znamo za oko tisuću umirućih, bolesnih i mrtvih morskih lavova, kao i 110 dupina. No, te brojke nisu posve točne jer se za mnoge životinje nikada ni ne sazna da su umrle. Ova brojka odnosi se na one koje su ljudi pronašli, a tko zna koliko ih je još u moru.

I dok neke životinje nisu ugrožene, druge nastradaju jer se hrane onima na koje aminokiseline utječu. Riječ je o prehrambenom lancu: alge pojedu ribe, njih pojedu morski lavovi, a oni pak kroz mlijeko svojim mladima izlučuju neurotoksine. Nije samo riječ o njima - ova alga utječe i na ribe, dupine i ljude.

- Morski lavovi su zapravo kanarinci u rudniku ugljena. Oni nam pokazuju sve poremećaje u našem okolišu - rekao je Dan Costa, direktor Instituta za znanost o moru i istaknuti profesor na Sveučilištu Santa Cruz.

Na svu sreću, smrti morskih stvorenja dovele su do reakcija. S jedne strane ljudi obilaze plaže i pretražuju more, tražeći životinje koje su još žive, kako bi im pomogli. Znanstvenici istražuju zašto i kada alge počinju štetno cvjetati, kako bi se to izbjeglo, a u San Franciscu je nedavno pokrenut program recikliranja otpadnih voda, kako one ne bi završile u moru.
