Zahvaljujući globalnim satelitskim promatranjima otkriveno je gotovo 20.000 ranije nepoznatih podvodnih planina, čime se broj poznatih planina u oceanima na Zemlji gotovo udvostručio, objavljeno je u travanjskom izdanju znanstvenog časopisa Earth and Space Science, prenosi Glas Istre.

Novom tehnikom mapiranja koja se temelji na satelitskim podacima otkrivene su tisuće ranije nepoznatih podmorskih planina.

Podvodne planine poznate su po morskoj bioraznolikosti, s obzirom na to da su njihovi stjenoviti zidovi, koji su nastali vulkanskom aktivnošću pogodni za brojna staništa.

Istodobno, podvodne planine potiču kruženje vode bogate hranjivim tvarima poput nitrata i fosfata.

Uobičajena metoda za pronalazak skrivenih planina je ispitivanje morskog dna sonarom kojim se mapira dno oceana, no riječ je o skupome i dugotrajnom procesu zbog čega se na ovaj način uspije mapirati tek oko 20 posto oceana.

Tim znanstvenika koje je vodila Julie Gevorgian iz Oceanografskog instituta Scripps pri državnom Sveučilištu San Diego i njezin kolega, geofizičar David Sandwell, zahvaljujući satelitskim promatranjima obavio je "topografsko istraživanje" morskog dna i popisao dosad nepoznate podvodne planine.

Koristeći satelitska promatranja znanstvenici su uočili 19.325 ranije nepoznatih podvodnih planina.

U ranijim istraživanjima uspjeli su ih mapirati više od 24.600. Većina novootkrivenih podvodnih planina relativno je mala. Visina im se procjenjuje na između 700 i 2500 metara.

Zahvaljujući globalnim satelitskim promatranjima otkriveno je gotovo 20.000 ranije nepoznatih podvodnih planina, čime se broj poznatih planina u oceanima na Zemlji gotovo udvostručio, objavljeno je u travanjskom izdanju znanstvenog časopisa Earth and Space Science, prenosi Glas Istre.

Novom tehnikom mapiranja koja se temelji na satelitskim podacima otkrivene su tisuće ranije nepoznatih podmorskih planina.

Podvodne planine poznate su po morskoj bioraznolikosti, s obzirom na to da su njihovi stjenoviti zidovi, koji su nastali vulkanskom aktivnošću pogodni za brojna staništa.

Istodobno, podvodne planine potiču kruženje vode bogate hranjivim tvarima poput nitrata i fosfata.

Uobičajena metoda za pronalazak skrivenih planina je ispitivanje morskog dna sonarom kojim se mapira dno oceana, no riječ je o skupome i dugotrajnom procesu zbog čega se na ovaj način uspije mapirati tek oko 20 posto oceana.

Tim znanstvenika koje je vodila Julie Gevorgian iz Oceanografskog instituta Scripps pri državnom Sveučilištu San Diego i njezin kolega, geofizičar David Sandwell, zahvaljujući satelitskim promatranjima obavio je "topografsko istraživanje" morskog dna i popisao dosad nepoznate podvodne planine.

Koristeći satelitska promatranja znanstvenici su uočili 19.325 ranije nepoznatih podvodnih planina.

U ranijim istraživanjima uspjeli su ih mapirati više od 24.600. Većina novootkrivenih podvodnih planina relativno je mala. Visina im se procjenjuje na između 700 i 2500 metara.

Zahvaljujući globalnim satelitskim promatranjima otkriveno je gotovo 20.000 ranije nepoznatih podvodnih planina, čime se broj poznatih planina u oceanima na Zemlji gotovo udvostručio, objavljeno je u travanjskom izdanju znanstvenog časopisa Earth and Space Science, prenosi Glas Istre.

Novom tehnikom mapiranja koja se temelji na satelitskim podacima otkrivene su tisuće ranije nepoznatih podmorskih planina.

Podvodne planine poznate su po morskoj bioraznolikosti, s obzirom na to da su njihovi stjenoviti zidovi, koji su nastali vulkanskom aktivnošću pogodni za brojna staništa.

Istodobno, podvodne planine potiču kruženje vode bogate hranjivim tvarima poput nitrata i fosfata.

Uobičajena metoda za pronalazak skrivenih planina je ispitivanje morskog dna sonarom kojim se mapira dno oceana, no riječ je o skupome i dugotrajnom procesu zbog čega se na ovaj način uspije mapirati tek oko 20 posto oceana.

Tim znanstvenika koje je vodila Julie Gevorgian iz Oceanografskog instituta Scripps pri državnom Sveučilištu San Diego i njezin kolega, geofizičar David Sandwell, zahvaljujući satelitskim promatranjima obavio je "topografsko istraživanje" morskog dna i popisao dosad nepoznate podvodne planine.

Koristeći satelitska promatranja znanstvenici su uočili 19.325 ranije nepoznatih podvodnih planina.

U ranijim istraživanjima uspjeli su ih mapirati više od 24.600. Većina novootkrivenih podvodnih planina relativno je mala. Visina im se procjenjuje na između 700 i 2500 metara.
