U veljači su predstavnici muzeja Australian National Maritime (ANMM) objavili senzacionalnu vijest da je jedna od olupina u američkoj luci Newport slavni Endeavour, jedrenjak istraživača Jamesa Cooka. Međutim, samo nekoliko sati poslije javili su se iz Rhode Island Marine Archaeology Projecta (RIMAP) i rekli da još ostaje otvorenih pitanja i da oni nisu sigurni da je Endeavour uistinu lociran.

Treba znati da ANMM i RIMAP zajednički istražuju podmorje luke Newport ne bi li identificirali Cookov brod. Međutim, nemaju nimalo lagan zadatak budući da su Englezi 1778., tijekom rata s Amerikancima, odnosno pobunjenim kolonijama, ispred Newporta namjerno potopili još nekoliko brodova kao podvodnu blokadu kako bi omeli neprijatelje u borbi za Rhode Island.

Naravno da je nakon toliko vremena izuzetno teško potvrditi koja je od tih brojnih olupina Endeavour, stoga svađa između australskih i američkih pomorskih arheologa ne treba čuditi.

Kevin Sumption je kao direktor australskoga ANMM-a samouvjereno rekao: Iako još nisu posloženi posljednji detalji slagalice, na temelju određenih arheoloških i arhivskih dokaza mogu reći da smo napokon pronašli Endeavour.

S tim se ne slaže Kathy Abbass, izvršna direktorica američkog RIMAP-a čiji ronioci i arheolozi zajedno s Australcima istražuju dno ispred Newporta još od 1999. godine.

– Istraživanje je još u tijeku, a olupina označena kao RI 2394 možda i jest jedrenjak Jamesa Cooka. Međutim, još nemamo neoborive dokaze koji bi sigurno upućivali na to da je riječ o njegovu brodu s tri jarbola. Na neka pitanja još moramo naći odgovore i tek kad to napravimo, znat ćemo da je olupina RI 2394 uistinu Endeavour – rekla je ona.

Zadatak pozitivne identifikacije svakako nije jednostavan jer je od olupine ostalo samo 15 posto materijala. No potvrđeno je da drvo potječe iz Europe, a ne iz SAD-a. S druge strane, površina na kojoj su razbacani dijelovi olupine RI 2394 upućuje na to da je ona bila približno iste dužine kao Endeavour (29,7 m).

HMS Endeavour bilo je istraživačko plovilo britanske kraljevske mornarice kojim je poručnik James Cook zapovijedao na putu za Australiju i Novi Zeland, na svojem prvom otkrivačkom putovanju od 1768. do 1771. godine. Cook je isplovio iz Plymoutha u kolovozu 1768., prošao je Cape Horn i stigao do Tahitija.

Australski znanstvenici uvjereni su u autentičnost nalaza

Nakon toga se zaustavljao na otocima Huahine, Bora Bora i Raiatea, te ih je proglasio teritorijem Velike Britanije. U rujnu 1769. usidrio se na Novom Zelandu i postao tek drugi europski brod koji je stigao do Novog Zelanda (prvi je bio Heemskerck Abela Tasmana 127 godina prije).

Cook je nastavio plovidbu i u travnju 1770. stigao je do zaljeva Botany u Australiji, koju su tada zvali Terra Australis Incognita. Endeavour je tako ušao u povijest kao prvi europski brod koji je došao do istočne obale Australije. Upravo zbog toga je itekako bitan za povijest Velike Britanije i Australije.

Cook je u Australiji popravljao svoj brod sedam tjedana, nakon čega se vratio u Veliku Britaniju 12. srpnja 1771. godine. Endeavour je nakon puta po Pacifiku pao u zaborav, te je tri godine služio za transport trupa od Velike Britanije do Falklandskog otočja i natrag.

Prodan je privatnom vlasniku 1775. godine, koji mu je promijenio ime u Lord Sandwich i rabio ga za prijevoz drva s Baltika u Englesku. Tijekom Američkog rata za neovisnost (1775. – 1783.) Endeavour je Englezima služio za transport trupa u SAD, a 1778. su ga zbog blokade zaljeva Narragansett oni namjerno poslali na dno sjeverno od Kozjeg otoka u luci Newport.

Unatoč svim modernim tehnologijama i dugogodišnjem istraživanju dna kod Newporta, Australci i Amerikanci još se ne mogu složiti oko toga je li Cookov Endeavour uistinu pronađen.

No istraživači ne sumnjaju u to da će ključni dokazi uskoro biti pronađeni i tada će se napokon potvrditi da slavni Endeavour ipak leži ispred luke Newport.

U veljači su predstavnici muzeja Australian National Maritime (ANMM) objavili senzacionalnu vijest da je jedna od olupina u američkoj luci Newport slavni Endeavour, jedrenjak istraživača Jamesa Cooka. Međutim, samo nekoliko sati poslije javili su se iz Rhode Island Marine Archaeology Projecta (RIMAP) i rekli da još ostaje otvorenih pitanja i da oni nisu sigurni da je Endeavour uistinu lociran.

Treba znati da ANMM i RIMAP zajednički istražuju podmorje luke Newport ne bi li identificirali Cookov brod. Međutim, nemaju nimalo lagan zadatak budući da su Englezi 1778., tijekom rata s Amerikancima, odnosno pobunjenim kolonijama, ispred Newporta namjerno potopili još nekoliko brodova kao podvodnu blokadu kako bi omeli neprijatelje u borbi za Rhode Island.

Naravno da je nakon toliko vremena izuzetno teško potvrditi koja je od tih brojnih olupina Endeavour, stoga svađa između australskih i američkih pomorskih arheologa ne treba čuditi.

Kevin Sumption je kao direktor australskoga ANMM-a samouvjereno rekao: Iako još nisu posloženi posljednji detalji slagalice, na temelju određenih arheoloških i arhivskih dokaza mogu reći da smo napokon pronašli Endeavour.

S tim se ne slaže Kathy Abbass, izvršna direktorica američkog RIMAP-a čiji ronioci i arheolozi zajedno s Australcima istražuju dno ispred Newporta još od 1999. godine.

– Istraživanje je još u tijeku, a olupina označena kao RI 2394 možda i jest jedrenjak Jamesa Cooka. Međutim, još nemamo neoborive dokaze koji bi sigurno upućivali na to da je riječ o njegovu brodu s tri jarbola. Na neka pitanja još moramo naći odgovore i tek kad to napravimo, znat ćemo da je olupina RI 2394 uistinu Endeavour – rekla je ona.

Zadatak pozitivne identifikacije svakako nije jednostavan jer je od olupine ostalo samo 15 posto materijala. No potvrđeno je da drvo potječe iz Europe, a ne iz SAD-a. S druge strane, površina na kojoj su razbacani dijelovi olupine RI 2394 upućuje na to da je ona bila približno iste dužine kao Endeavour (29,7 m).

HMS Endeavour bilo je istraživačko plovilo britanske kraljevske mornarice kojim je poručnik James Cook zapovijedao na putu za Australiju i Novi Zeland, na svojem prvom otkrivačkom putovanju od 1768. do 1771. godine. Cook je isplovio iz Plymoutha u kolovozu 1768., prošao je Cape Horn i stigao do Tahitija.

Nakon toga se zaustavljao na otocima Huahine, Bora Bora i Raiatea, te ih je proglasio teritorijem Velike Britanije. U rujnu 1769. usidrio se na Novom Zelandu i postao tek drugi europski brod koji je stigao do Novog Zelanda (prvi je bio Heemskerck Abela Tasmana 127 godina prije).

Cook je nastavio plovidbu i u travnju 1770. stigao je do zaljeva Botany u Australiji, koju su tada zvali Terra Australis Incognita. Endeavour je tako ušao u povijest kao prvi europski brod koji je došao do istočne obale Australije. Upravo zbog toga je itekako bitan za povijest Velike Britanije i Australije.

Cook je u Australiji popravljao svoj brod sedam tjedana, nakon čega se vratio u Veliku Britaniju 12. srpnja 1771. godine. Endeavour je nakon puta po Pacifiku pao u zaborav, te je tri godine služio za transport trupa od Velike Britanije do Falklandskog otočja i natrag.

Prodan je privatnom vlasniku 1775. godine, koji mu je promijenio ime u Lord Sandwich i rabio ga za prijevoz drva s Baltika u Englesku. Tijekom Američkog rata za neovisnost (1775. – 1783.) Endeavour je Englezima služio za transport trupa u SAD, a 1778. su ga zbog blokade zaljeva Narragansett oni namjerno poslali na dno sjeverno od Kozjeg otoka u luci Newport.

Unatoč svim modernim tehnologijama i dugogodišnjem istraživanju dna kod Newporta, Australci i Amerikanci još se ne mogu složiti oko toga je li Cookov Endeavour uistinu pronađen.

No istraživači ne sumnjaju u to da će ključni dokazi uskoro biti pronađeni i tada će se napokon potvrditi da slavni Endeavour ipak leži ispred luke Newport.
