Onima koji se ne žele cijepiti uz objašnjenje kako je tehnologija mRNa cjepiva praktički preko noći izvučena iz šešira i potpuno neistražena, korisno je pogledati znanstveno objašnjenja epidemiologa prof. Chrisa Beyrera, direktora uglednog Centra Johns Hopkins za javno zdravstvo i ljudska prava iz kojeg je razvidno da se na toj tehnologiji radilo gotovo pola stoljeća, donosi Slobodna Dalmacija.  

Tehnologija glasničke RNK-a (Messenger RNA, ili mRNA, odnosno mRNK ) otkrivena je još početkom 1960-ih godina, a istraživanje o tome kako se mRNA može isporučiti u stanice razvijeno je 1970-ih. Dakle, pitanje je zašto je trebalo toliko puno godina, sve do pandemije COVID-19 2020., da prvo mRNA cjepivo dođe na  tržište?

Rane godine istraživanja mRNA obilježene su velikim entuzijazmom za novu tehnologiju, ali i nekim teškim tehničkim izazovima za koje je bilo potrebno mnogo inovacija da se prevladaju. Najveći izazov bio je da će se mRNA u tijelu munjevito razgraditi, puno prije nego što bi mogla "isporučiti" svoju poruku - RNA transkript - i biti pročitana u proteinima u stanicama.

KAKO JE DOŠLO DO RJEŠENJA TOG PROBLEMA?   

Rješenje je došlo s napretkom nanotehnologije: razvojem masnih kapljica (lipidnih nanočestica) koje su omotale mRNA poput balončića, što je omogućilo ulazak u stanice. U stanici, poruka mRNA mogla bi se prevesti u proteine, poput proteina šiljka SARS-CoV-2, a imunološki sustav bi tada bio pripremljen prepoznati strani protein.

ŠTO SE DOGODILO KAD SU ZNANSTVENICI SHVATILI MOGUĆNOST OVE TEHNOLOGIJE?

Prva mRNA cjepiva koja koriste ove masne omotnice razvijena su protiv smrtonosnog virusa ebole, ali budući da se taj virus širio samo u ograničenom broju afričkih zemalja, nije došlo do njegovog komercijalnog razvoja.

Tek je pandemija COVID-a koja se proširila na sve kontinente  potaknula proizvođače da razviju desetke potencijalnih cjepiva protiv SARS-CoV-2 i izazvala ogromna povećanja financiranja istraživanja. Neka od tih cjepiva koriste tradicionalne metode koje uključuju adenovirus kao sustav isporuke proteina šiljka, poput vektorskog cjepivo Johnson & Johnson i oxfordskog AstraZenece. A također zahvaljujući desetljećima istraživanja i inovacija, tehnologija mRNA cjepiva bila je spremna. S COVID-om je ova tehnologija dobila svoj trenutak i pokazala se iznimno sigurnom i učinkovitom. Takvo je Pfizerovo cjepivo  i ono Moderne.

ŠTO JE SLJEDEĆE?

Proizvođači cjepiva već razvijaju mRNA cjepiva za zaštitu od drugih respiratornih virusa kao što je gripa. Moderna istražuje primjene mRNA tehnologije za zaštitu od HIV-a. To je novo doba za tehnologiju i proizvodnju cjepiva, a svjedoči o znanstvenom napretku i desetljećima istraživanja, zaključuje prof. Chris Beyrer.

Onima koji se ne žele cijepiti uz objašnjenje kako je tehnologija mRNa cjepiva praktički preko noći izvučena iz šešira i potpuno neistražena, korisno je pogledati znanstveno objašnjenja epidemiologa prof. Chrisa Beyrera, direktora uglednog Centra Johns Hopkins za javno zdravstvo i ljudska prava iz kojeg je razvidno da se na toj tehnologiji radilo gotovo pola stoljeća, donosi Slobodna Dalmacija.  

Tehnologija glasničke RNK-a (Messenger RNA, ili mRNA, odnosno mRNK ) otkrivena je još početkom 1960-ih godina, a istraživanje o tome kako se mRNA može isporučiti u stanice razvijeno je 1970-ih. Dakle, pitanje je zašto je trebalo toliko puno godina, sve do pandemije COVID-19 2020., da prvo mRNA cjepivo dođe na  tržište?

Rane godine istraživanja mRNA obilježene su velikim entuzijazmom za novu tehnologiju, ali i nekim teškim tehničkim izazovima za koje je bilo potrebno mnogo inovacija da se prevladaju. Najveći izazov bio je da će se mRNA u tijelu munjevito razgraditi, puno prije nego što bi mogla "isporučiti" svoju poruku - RNA transkript - i biti pročitana u proteinima u stanicama.

KAKO JE DOŠLO DO RJEŠENJA TOG PROBLEMA?   

Rješenje je došlo s napretkom nanotehnologije: razvojem masnih kapljica (lipidnih nanočestica) koje su omotale mRNA poput balončića, što je omogućilo ulazak u stanice. U stanici, poruka mRNA mogla bi se prevesti u proteine, poput proteina šiljka SARS-CoV-2, a imunološki sustav bi tada bio pripremljen prepoznati strani protein.

ŠTO SE DOGODILO KAD SU ZNANSTVENICI SHVATILI MOGUĆNOST OVE TEHNOLOGIJE?

Prva mRNA cjepiva koja koriste ove masne omotnice razvijena su protiv smrtonosnog virusa ebole, ali budući da se taj virus širio samo u ograničenom broju afričkih zemalja, nije došlo do njegovog komercijalnog razvoja.

Tek je pandemija COVID-a koja se proširila na sve kontinente  potaknula proizvođače da razviju desetke potencijalnih cjepiva protiv SARS-CoV-2 i izazvala ogromna povećanja financiranja istraživanja. Neka od tih cjepiva koriste tradicionalne metode koje uključuju adenovirus kao sustav isporuke proteina šiljka, poput vektorskog cjepivo Johnson & Johnson i oxfordskog AstraZenece. A također zahvaljujući desetljećima istraživanja i inovacija, tehnologija mRNA cjepiva bila je spremna. S COVID-om je ova tehnologija dobila svoj trenutak i pokazala se iznimno sigurnom i učinkovitom. Takvo je Pfizerovo cjepivo  i ono Moderne.

ŠTO JE SLJEDEĆE?

Proizvođači cjepiva već razvijaju mRNA cjepiva za zaštitu od drugih respiratornih virusa kao što je gripa. Moderna istražuje primjene mRNA tehnologije za zaštitu od HIV-a. To je novo doba za tehnologiju i proizvodnju cjepiva, a svjedoči o znanstvenom napretku i desetljećima istraživanja, zaključuje prof. Chris Beyrer.

Onima koji se ne žele cijepiti uz objašnjenje kako je tehnologija mRNa cjepiva praktički preko noći izvučena iz šešira i potpuno neistražena, korisno je pogledati znanstveno objašnjenja epidemiologa prof. Chrisa Beyrera, direktora uglednog Centra Johns Hopkins za javno zdravstvo i ljudska prava iz kojeg je razvidno da se na toj tehnologiji radilo gotovo pola stoljeća, donosi Slobodna Dalmacija.  

Tehnologija glasničke RNK-a (Messenger RNA, ili mRNA, odnosno mRNK ) otkrivena je još početkom 1960-ih godina, a istraživanje o tome kako se mRNA može isporučiti u stanice razvijeno je 1970-ih. Dakle, pitanje je zašto je trebalo toliko puno godina, sve do pandemije COVID-19 2020., da prvo mRNA cjepivo dođe na  tržište?
