Velikoj većini onih koji su gledali kultni film Kad jaganjci utihnu u živom sjećanju je, pored glavnog negativca Hannibala Lectera, ostao i Buffalo Bill – čovjek koji je otimao mlade žene, držao ih zatočene, a potom ubijao i gulio njihovu kožu kako bi si sašio “žensko odijelo” u kojem će se, vjerovao je, osjećati ugodnije. Međutim, mali broj gledatelja tog filma je čuo za podatak da je lik Buffalo Billa inspiriran stvarnim slučajem jednog američkog ubojice. Zvao se Gary Heidnik, a odgovoran je za otmicu šest i ubojstvo dvije žene.

Točnije bi bilo reći da je Heidnikov slučaj poslužio kao inspiracija piscu Thomasu Harrisu za lik iz njegovog romana Kad jaganjci utihnu, po kojem je snimljen istoimeni film. Ono što je zajedničko i Heidniku i Buffalo Billu je da su obojica vodili dvostruki život, obojica su svoje žrtve (redovito ženskog spola) držali u podrumu. Dodatna jeziva sličnost je što su obojica svoje žrtve žive držali u posebnoj jami u podrumu te mrcvarili njihova tijela nakon nasilne smrti.

U vremenskom razdoblju od četiri mjeseca (od studenog 1986. do ožujka 1987. godine) Heidnik je oteo šest žena: Sarah Lindsay, Josefinu Riveru, Lisu Thomas, Jacqueline Askins, Agnes Adams i Deborah Dudley. Djelovao je tako što bi namamio žene u svoju kuću, zatim ih je svladavao i vezao lancima te polugole držao u jami u svom podrumu. Zatočene ih je hranio psećom hranom i opetovano ih silovao. Također ih je podvrgavao fizičkim i psihičkim mučenjima.

24-godišnja Sandra Lindsay je umrla od posljedica gladi i mučenja. 23-godišnja Deborah Dudley umrla je od strujnog udara. Naime, Heidnik je jamu u kojoj je držao žrtvu napunio vodom te u nju ubacio produžni kabel pod strujnim naponom.

Prije uhićenja Heidnik je vodio dvostruki život. Nakon teškog djetinjstva u kojem je trpio zlostavljanje svog oca, neostvarene karijere vojnika i propalog braka, odlučio je osnovati vlastitu vjersku zajednicu. Heidnik je osnovao 1971. godine crkvu kojoj je dao ime "Ujedinjena crkva Božjih službenika". Protekom vremena je postigao određeni uspjeh, privlačeći ljude labilne psihe, te je od svoje privatne vjerske zajednice stvorio unosan posao. Do 1987. godine (kada je uhićen) Heidnik je od početnih 1500 dolara koliko je bilo na računu njegove crkve skupio više od 500.000 dolara.

Uhićen je tako što je jedna od žena (Josefina Rivera) koje je zarobio stekla njegovo povjerenje i uspjela pobjeći nakon čega je sve prijavila policiji. Na suđenju su odvjetnici okrivljenika pokušali braniti argumentom njegove neuračunljivosti. Sud je procijenio da osoba koja je uspjela zaraditi preko 500.000 dolara ne može biti proglašena neuračunljivom te je Heidnika osudio na smrtnu kaznu. Heidnikov posljednji obrok bile su dvije kriške pizze i crna kava. Pogubljen je smrtonosnom injekcijom 6. srpnja 1999. godine.

Velikoj većini onih koji su gledali kultni film Kad jaganjci utihnu u živom sjećanju je, pored glavnog negativca Hannibala Lectera, ostao i Buffalo Bill – čovjek koji je otimao mlade žene, držao ih zatočene, a potom ubijao i gulio njihovu kožu kako bi si sašio “žensko odijelo” u kojem će se, vjerovao je, osjećati ugodnije. Međutim, mali broj gledatelja tog filma je čuo za podatak da je lik Buffalo Billa inspiriran stvarnim slučajem jednog američkog ubojice. Zvao se Gary Heidnik, a odgovoran je za otmicu šest i ubojstvo dvije žene.

Točnije bi bilo reći da je Heidnikov slučaj poslužio kao inspiracija piscu Thomasu Harrisu za lik iz njegovog romana Kad jaganjci utihnu, po kojem je snimljen istoimeni film. Ono što je zajedničko i Heidniku i Buffalo Billu je da su obojica vodili dvostruki život, obojica su svoje žrtve (redovito ženskog spola) držali u podrumu. Dodatna jeziva sličnost je što su obojica svoje žrtve žive držali u posebnoj jami u podrumu te mrcvarili njihova tijela nakon nasilne smrti.

U vremenskom razdoblju od četiri mjeseca (od studenog 1986. do ožujka 1987. godine) Heidnik je oteo šest žena: Sarah Lindsay, Josefinu Riveru, Lisu Thomas, Jacqueline Askins, Agnes Adams i Deborah Dudley. Djelovao je tako što bi namamio žene u svoju kuću, zatim ih je svladavao i vezao lancima te polugole držao u jami u svom podrumu. Zatočene ih je hranio psećom hranom i opetovano ih silovao. Također ih je podvrgavao fizičkim i psihičkim mučenjima.

24-godišnja Sandra Lindsay je umrla od posljedica gladi i mučenja. 23-godišnja Deborah Dudley umrla je od strujnog udara. Naime, Heidnik je jamu u kojoj je držao žrtvu napunio vodom te u nju ubacio produžni kabel pod strujnim naponom.

Prije uhićenja Heidnik je vodio dvostruki život. Nakon teškog djetinjstva u kojem je trpio zlostavljanje svog oca, neostvarene karijere vojnika i propalog braka, odlučio je osnovati vlastitu vjersku zajednicu. Heidnik je osnovao 1971. godine crkvu kojoj je dao ime "Ujedinjena crkva Božjih službenika". Protekom vremena je postigao određeni uspjeh, privlačeći ljude labilne psihe, te je od svoje privatne vjerske zajednice stvorio unosan posao. Do 1987. godine (kada je uhićen) Heidnik je od početnih 1500 dolara koliko je bilo na računu njegove crkve skupio više od 500.000 dolara.

Uhićen je tako što je jedna od žena (Josefina Rivera) koje je zarobio stekla njegovo povjerenje i uspjela pobjeći nakon čega je sve prijavila policiji. Na suđenju su odvjetnici okrivljenika pokušali braniti argumentom njegove neuračunljivosti. Sud je procijenio da osoba koja je uspjela zaraditi preko 500.000 dolara ne može biti proglašena neuračunljivom te je Heidnika osudio na smrtnu kaznu. Heidnikov posljednji obrok bile su dvije kriške pizze i crna kava. Pogubljen je smrtonosnom injekcijom 6. srpnja 1999. godine.

Velikoj većini onih koji su gledali kultni film Kad jaganjci utihnu u živom sjećanju je, pored glavnog negativca Hannibala Lectera, ostao i Buffalo Bill – čovjek koji je otimao mlade žene, držao ih zatočene, a potom ubijao i gulio njihovu kožu kako bi si sašio “žensko odijelo” u kojem će se, vjerovao je, osjećati ugodnije. Međutim, mali broj gledatelja tog filma je čuo za podatak da je lik Buffalo Billa inspiriran stvarnim slučajem jednog američkog ubojice. Zvao se Gary Heidnik, a odgovoran je za otmicu šest i ubojstvo dvije žene.

Točnije bi bilo reći da je Heidnikov slučaj poslužio kao inspiracija piscu Thomasu Harrisu za lik iz njegovog romana Kad jaganjci utihnu, po kojem je snimljen istoimeni film. Ono što je zajedničko i Heidniku i Buffalo Billu je da su obojica vodili dvostruki život, obojica su svoje žrtve (redovito ženskog spola) držali u podrumu.
